Colorado Sun Daily Sun-Up: A Pandemic Year - Lasting changes in our healthcare system

View descriptionShare

You’re listening to a special edition of The Daily Sun-Up, a podcast from The Colorado Sun. This week we’re featuring special coverage to mark the one-year anniversary of the first known coronavirus case in Colorado. This is Fear, Loss, Change: A Pandemic Year. I’m Lucy Haggard.

And I’m Michael Booth. Today is Wednesday, March 3rd, 2021.

Across the state, health care workers and companies have worked at warp speed to respond to the pandemic.

And even after vaccines have been distributed, experts say many of these adaptations are here to stay. Here’s Richard Zane, chief innovation officer for UCHealth.

Let’s dive into that more. What will be different about Colorado’s healthcare system from the perspective of patients?

The healthcare workforce has also seen significant shifts. What’s changed for employees?

Some health care leaders worried that burnout and fear would send a lot of skilled people out of the health care workforce.

There’s also the hospital businesses themselves, whether nonprofit or for profit. Take Lincoln Community Hospital in Hugo, a quiet town on the Eastern Plains. What role has it played in this pandemic?

We’ve talked a lot about hospitals, but what’s changed for long term care facilities, including nursing homes?

Companies across the state that were previously competitors are now working together. How long will these partnerships last, and what might they look like when coronavirus is no longer the prime threat?

Competition will continue, HealthOne just built in Centennial, but things that will last include emergency and medical collaboration among docs etc

CHA helped set up a network of real-time exchange of best covid treatments among the medical directors even at competing hospitals.
