Hour 2 of the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show centered on immigration enforcement, border security, the 2026 midterm elections, California politics, energy policy, and economic affordability. The hour opened with discussion of the closely watched Texas Senate race, as Clay Travis highlighted new polling showing Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton gaining ground against Democratic challenger James Talarico. The hosts argued that voter engagement and turnout would be critical in both the Texas Senate contest and the gubernatorial race, framing the upcoming midterms as a major test of Republican momentum and support for President Donald Trump’s agenda.

A significant portion of Hour 2 featured an extended interview with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The conversation focused on immigration enforcement, border security operations, and efforts to address the consequences of policies implemented during the Biden administration. Mullin discussed DHS initiatives aimed at increasing inspections at ports of entry, combating human trafficking, locating missing migrant children, and strengthening immigration enforcement nationwide. He detailed ongoing operations targeting criminal trafficking organizations and argued that border enforcement has improved dramatically under President Trump. The interview emphasized illegal immigration, cartel activity, human trafficking, national security concerns, and the administration’s efforts to reduce unlawful border crossings and increase deportations.

The discussion then shifted to New York City and the ongoing debate over sanctuary city policies. Mullin criticized cooperation levels between federal immigration authorities and local governments, citing a recent ICE operation involving a Dominican national with an extensive criminal record. The hosts and Mullin argued that sanctuary policies make it more difficult for federal authorities to remove criminal offenders and contended that greater cooperation between local governments and ICE would improve public safety. The conversation expanded into a broader examination of crime, immigration enforcement, deportation priorities, gang activity, and the role of major Democratic-led cities in immigration policy debates.

Immigration enforcement remained a central theme as Mullin outlined the administration’s deportation efforts and emphasized DHS’s commitment to enforcing existing immigration laws. He argued that federal authorities do not selectively enforce laws and discussed the agency’s focus on criminal offenders, while also maintaining that illegal entry itself remains a violation of immigration law. The interview included discussion of deportation numbers, terrorism-related arrests, biometric screening procedures, and the challenges of identifying individuals who entered the country under false identities. The hosts portrayed border security and immigration enforcement as among the most significant accomplishments of President Trump’s administration heading into the midterm elections.

Following the DHS interview, Clay and Buck turned their attention to California’s gubernatorial race with Republican candidate Steve Hilton. Hilton argued that California voters are increasingly dissatisfied with one-party Democratic rule and claimed to be attracting support from independents and former Democratic voters concerned about affordability and quality-of-life issues. The conversation focused heavily on California’s economic challenges, voter enthusiasm, polling trends, and the possibility of a competitive statewide race in a state that has long favored Democratic candidates. The hosts framed California as a referendum on progressive governance and discussed whether voter frustration over living costs could produce a political realignment.

Economic affordability emerged as one of the dominant topics of the hour. Hilton criticized Democratic governance and promoted proposals aimed at reducing the cost of living, including lowering state tax burdens and restructuring California’s energy policies. The discussion highlighted inflation, household expenses, taxation, housing affordability, and economic competitiveness. Hilton argued that reducing taxes and lowering gasoline prices could provide immediate financial relief to California families, while the hosts connected those themes to broader national concerns about affordability that they believe are influencing voters across the country.

Energy policy became another major focus as Hilton and the hosts examined California’s dependence on imported oil and refined fuel. Hilton argued that California possesses substantial energy resources but has chosen to limit domestic production while increasing imports from foreign suppliers. The segment explored domestic energy production, oil drilling, climate policy, refinery closures, fuel transportation, global energy markets, carbon emissions, and the relationship between energy policy and consumer costs. Clay and Buck used the discussion to reinforce their broader argument that domestic energy development remains essential to economic growth, lower fuel prices, and national security.

The interview also addressed the role of international energy markets, with discussion about how global supply chains affect American fuel prices. Hilton criticized California’s approach to environmental regulation and argued that the state’s policies have unintentionally increased reliance on foreign energy sources. The hosts contrasted California’s energy strategy with Republican calls for expanded domestic drilling and highlighted energy independence as a key political issue ahead of the midterms.

Toward the end of the hour, Steve Hilton delivered a closing appeal to California voters, arguing that Republicans have a viable path to victory if turnout increases among conservatives and independents seeking change. Clay and Buck emphasized the importance of voter participation and framed the race as an opportunity to reshape California’s political direction. The conversation underscored themes of election strategy, grassroots mobilization, voter enthusiasm, and dissatisfaction with the political status quo.

The hour concluded with a listener call regarding U.S. energy independence and whether America should separate itself from global oil markets. Clay explained why oil functions as a global commodity and argued that complete isolation from international energy markets is not practical. The segment examined global supply chains, energy economics, commodity pricing, oil production, and the benefits of increased domestic energy output. The hosts maintained that expanding American oil and gas production helps stabilize prices and strengthens the U.S. economy while reducing vulnerability to international disruptions.
