Is it unfeminist to discuss women's spending habits? SPENDTEMBER with Emma & Victoria

View descriptionShare

In the final episode of The Comments Section Season Two, we’re digging through the dirty laundry pile that is the intersection of feminism and spending habits, and whether it is unfeminist to critique women's spending habits. Historically, financial media has framed men's spending around wealth-building and investment, while women's spending has often been associated with saving and cutting back. This dichotomy raises the question: is it wrong to scrutinise women's spending when men aren't subjected to the same narrative?

Telling women to ignore their spending habits and simply "build wealth" without addressing the deeper societal pressures misses the point. While it’s crucial to acknowledge that the pressure to maintain a certain appearance or lifestyle is heavily marketed to us, we also discuss the importance of engaging with our financial behaviours. It’s not just about blaming ourselves but rather understanding the structures that shape our financial decisions and taking control to redirect our resources.
