Bongani Bingwa speaks to Sanjeev Raghubir, Chief Sustainability Officer at the Shoprite Group, about South Africa’s household hunger reaching its highest level in 15 years, according to the South African Food Security Index 2026. Behind the figures are families struggling to put food on the table, parents skipping meals so their children can eat, and households sacrificing nutrition to afford cheaper food. Although food inflation has eased, rising electricity, transport and housing costs continue to squeeze household budgets. The discussion explores how businesses can help address food insecurity, why rural households headed by women are among the hardest hit, and what more can be done to ensure vulnerable families have access to affordable, nutritious food.
