Bongani Bingwa speaks to Prof Rebecca Garland, an atmospheric scientist at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, about the strange sulphur-like smell that many Johannesburg residents have noticed in the air over the past few days. Described by many as a “rotten egg” odour, the smell is often linked to gases such as sulphur compounds or hydrogen sulphide. While the source may not necessarily be nearby, scientists explain that pollution can travel hundreds of kilometres through the atmosphere, carried by wind and weather systems from industrial regions such as the Highveld and parts of Mpumalanga into Gauteng.
