The Africa Report: Ward 81 understanding River Park's history and its future

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Thabo Mopasi, an Alexandra social history researcher, as we take the show outside the studio to River Park in Alexandra’s Ward 81. As residents prepare to vote in the local government elections, we look at the community’s history and the challenges that continue to affect daily life. These include chemical toilets, sewage spilling into streets, illegal dumping, broken pavements and potholes, problems that were already highlighted in a City of Johannesburg inspection report in 2012. Established in the early 1990s as a refuge for families fleeing political violence in Alexandra, River Park’s residents are still fighting for basic services, secure housing, title deeds and accountability from the municipality. We explore how the community has changed over the years, what residents are still waiting for and what they want from their local government.
