Bongani Bingwa speaks to Professor Richard Calland, Emeritus Associate Professor in Public Law at the University of Cape Town, about the outcome of the 2026 US midterm elections and what it means for President Donald Trump. The Democrats have won control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, dealing a significant political setback to the president. Several Republican candidates backed by Trump also lost key Senate races, while the cost of living, rising fuel and grocery prices, housing costs and concerns over his tariff policies featured prominently in the campaign. Trump has acknowledged the Democrats’ victory, conceding that issues including the war involving Iran and rising fuel prices weighed on voters. We examine what this shift in power means for Trump’s ability to govern, the balance of power in Washington and the future of US politics.
