For more than 20 years, many black, poor, and HIV-positive women in South Africa have suffered forced sterilisation, with no compensation to date. The Gender Commission’s investigation found major rights violations and flaws in consent processes. HRI is now representing over 100 women from six provinces who report they were coerced into the procedure.
