In 19th-century Europe, many women were dying from childbirth fever, with doctors blaming bad air or fate. Ignaz Semmelweis noticed that doctors often went straight from performing autopsies to delivering babies and insisted they wash their hands with a chlorinated lime solution, even before the concept of germs was widely accepted. The practice reduced maternal deaths dramatically, from about 18% to under 2% but his ideas were initially rejected, only later becoming the foundation of modern hygiene and infection control.
