Armed gangs have been targeting the construction industry, forcing contractors to abandon 84 infrastructure projects worth more than 27 billion rand. This so-called construction mafia hijacks major construction sites, demanding a 30 percent cut, even resorting to violence.
State infrastructure projects have been worst hit, with more than 60 projects of the the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) being affected.
