Bongani Bingwa speaks to Themba Mkhize, musical director of Ingoma-Busuku / Nightsong, a South African musical theatre production running at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria from 16 October to 1 November 2026. The story follows Jabulani, a gifted young musician torn between his Western classical training and the soulful Zulu singing tradition of isicathamiya. Haunted by ancestral voices and searching for answers about his absent father, a respected singer, Jabulani embarks on a moving journey of music, family history and identity. We find out more about the production, the music behind the story and what theatre lovers can expect from this celebration of South African culture.
