Breakfast with Bongani BingwaBreakfast with Bongani Bingwa

How serious is the El Niño threat?

View descriptionShare

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Dr Kgakatsi, Director of Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction at the Department of Agriculture, and Christine Engelbrecht, lead scientist at the South African Weather Service, about the possibility of an unusually hot and dry summer ahead. With a strong El Niño developing, much of South Africa could experience above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall from October through December, potentially continuing into January 2027. The discussion looks at how prepared South Africa is, what the conditions could mean for water supplies, homes and food production, and what farmers and the public should be doing now to prepare.
