Bongani Bingwa speaks to Steve Gruzd from the South African Institute of International Affairs about how rising global conflict could affect South Africa’s already fragile economic recovery. The country’s economy grew by just 0.4% in the final quarter of 2025, a slight improvement from 0.3% in the previous quarter. In his recent budget speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana expressed optimism that South Africa is beginning to turn a corner, pointing to stronger-than-expected tax revenue, progress in tackling large-scale corruption, and the country’s removal from the grey list. But renewed global conflict and the uncertainty surrounding oil supply and prices could complicate those projections. With the world’s major economies in the Group of Seven also grappling with the economic consequences of war, the conversation examines whether countries like South Africa have any real influence over global shocks or are simply forced to react to them.
