Bongani Bingwa speaks to Mike Shingange, COSATU’s newly elected president, about the federation’s new leadership and its political future. Shingange takes over at a time of change, with outgoing president Zingiswa Losi elected general secretary at COSATU’s reconvened 15th National Congress. The congress also comes as COSATU considers a proposed “super pact” that would allow members to campaign and vote for either the ANC or the SACP. With the SACP preparing to contest local government elections independently for the first time, what does this mean for the future of the alliance and COSATU’s political direction?
