Bongani Bingwa speaks to Dr Michael Masiapato, Commissioner of the Border Management Authority, about efforts to clamp down on corruption among officials at South Africa’s ports of entry. The authority says more than 50 officials have already been dismissed for corruption, with dozens more facing disciplinary action for offences ranging from fraudulently stamping passports to allowing illegal entry and “selling extra days” to travellers with expired visas. In response, the BMA is introducing body-worn cameras for frontline officers, which officials say are already acting as a deterrent. Alongside the cameras, new technology such as drones, enhanced surveillance systems and digital evidence tools are being deployed to strengthen monitoring and accountability.
