When a Nation Turns on Itself (The Drew Mariani Show)

View descriptionShare

The American Civil War can feel far away—sepia-toned photographs, old monuments, and names carved into stone. But as Drew Mariani reminds us, it was far more than a battlefield conflict. It was “a national reckoning,” when political division became bloodshed and the survival of the republic hung in the balance.

Joined by Dr. Susan Hanssen, associate professor of history at the University of Dallas, Drew explored the causes and consequences of the war with clarity and urgency. Dr. Hanssen called it “the greatest conflict to take place on the North American continent,” noting the staggering cost: 600,000 dead and a nation permanently marked by grief.

Their conversation looked beyond famous battles to the deeper fractures beneath them: party collapse, sectional tensions, church divisions, slavery, and the failure of compromise. Dr. Hanssen pointed out that even before Abraham Lincoln took office, the country had already been transformed. Southern states had seceded, formed a new government, and written a constitution that explicitly protected slavery.

One striking theme was how quickly political disunity became national conflict. Dr. Hanssen observed that the Democratic Party split before the nation did, opening the door to Lincoln’s election and accelerating secession. Beyond a war at home, the friction became global drama as foreign powers watched the American experiment with intense interest.

Drew and Dr. Hanssen also reflected on the dark early winters of the conflict — years marked by uncertainty, stalemate, and rising casualties. By the time shots were fired at Fort Sumter, the nation’s wounds were already deep.

This segment offered a sobering reminder that history is not just about the past. It can also illuminate the dangers of division, the cost of moral failure, and the fragile gift of unity.
