What Can the Catholic Church Teach Us About Beauty? (Morning Air)

View descriptionShare

Glen Lewerenz welcomed Kim Morgan, a Catholic wife, mom, and licensed clinical social worker, to chat about the irresistible beauty of the Catholic Church, and how it might just be the thing that keeps people coming back. ✨

Beauty Is Evangelization! Kim shared about how beauty in the Church isn't just extra fluff. It's intentional. Think: stained glass, the scent of incense, the flicker of candlelight, and bells during Consecration. All these "smells and bells" help us grasp the sacred.

She explained that the Church has historically been the place where people experienced the most stunning art and music: especially in a time when museums weren’t accessible to the average person. 🏛️ Even today, these elements point to Christ, making faith visible for those who may not understand every reading or Latin phrase.

The Christmas Sacredness is Immaculate 🌟 At Christmas, Kim loves the dark, quiet moments of Midnight Mass, where you feel the anticipation of Christ's birth, imagining Mary and Joseph in the stillness of that first Christmas night. 🕯️

And who can forget Silent Night by candlelight? Or the "Joy to the World" organ explosion with trumpets? 🎶 Chills. Literal chills.

But... What About Simplicity? Glen brought up the classic debate: Shouldn’t the Church focus on feeding the poor instead of fancy art? Kim's response? It’s not either/or. The Church has always cared for the marginalized while using beauty to point to the glory of God. 🌿

Beauty isn't a distraction; it's a foretaste of Heaven. The ornate cathedrals, gold tabernacles, and majestic music remind us of the extraordinary reality that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist.

Young Catholics Are Loving Tradition 🕰️ Surprise twist! Younger Catholics seem to be flocking back to traditional beauty: Latin chants and the scent of aged incense lingering in century-old churches. 📿 Why? Kim thinks it's because the sacred stands out. It's different from the casual, noisy, screen-filled world they live in.

Final Thought? Beauty in the Catholic Church isn't just decoration: it's a spiritual language that speaks of the divine. The art, the music, the architecture? They're sacramental signs pointing us to the ultimate beauty: Christ.

🔥 Next time you're at Mass, take a sec to soak it all in. That golden tabernacle, those heavenly voices? They're all whispering the same truth: You are in the presence of God.
