Sanctify Your Scroll (Morning Air)

View descriptionShare

Scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok often starts with good intentions – staying connected, laughing at a reel, or finding inspiration. But all too often, it ends with wasted hours, anxiety, or distraction from what matters most. On Morning Air, John Morales speaks with Catholic author and speaker Danielle Bean about how to take back control of social media and “sanctify your scroll.”

The Catholic Approach to Social Media

Danielle Bean explains that Catholics are called to use social media differently from the rest of the world. Whether we realize it or not, our online presence can serve as a witness of faith. That makes how we speak, share, and interact online more important than ever.

The Good: Evangelization and Connection

Used wisely, social media offers Catholics powerful opportunities to:

-Stay connected with family and friends

-Pray (like on the Relevant Radio app)

-Share faith stories and prayer requests

-Spread the Gospel to people who might not otherwise hear it

Danielle points to St. Carlo Acutis – who used the internet to evangelize in creative and faithful ways – as a model for today’s Catholics.

The Bad: Distraction and Addiction

Social media apps are designed to keep us hooked. Even “harmless” content, like life hacks or funny reels, can easily lead to wasted time. Danielle warns that “every sin is on display on the internet,” making it easy for Christians to be pulled into these traps.

The Ugly: Division and Groupthink

From toxic political debates to harmful trends, social media can spread negativity quickly. Danielle cautions that unchecked exposure to these feeds can increase anxiety, foster comparison, and damage relationships.

Practical Steps to Control Social Media

Danielle Bean suggests several strategies for families and individuals:

-Set limits: Use phone apps to restrict daily screen time.

-Designate phone-free zones: Keep devices away during meals, prayer, and family time.

-Curate your feed: Follow accounts that inspire faith and joy while unfollowing those that spread division.

-Be intentional: Decide whether being on social media serves your spiritual life – or distracts from it.

“Sanctify Your Scroll”

Treat your time online as part of your walk with Christ. Choose content and interactions that uplift rather than drain. By setting boundaries, we can transform our digital habits and make room for prayer, family, and real-world encounters with God.
