Laughter, Love, and a Lesson in Trust (Morning Air)

View descriptionShare

When John Morales welcomed comedian Keith Alberstadt to Morning Air, listeners got more than quick one-liners. They heard a Catholic husband and father explain how faith is lived, especially when life doesn’t go according to plan.

John opened the segment by playing a clip of one of Keith's stand-up bits. Keith told the story of his father-in-law, Bob, discovering that every photo on his phone had a Christmas wreath border. Instead of troubleshooting, Bob simply shrugged: “My phone just does that."

Keith humorously retorted. "No, it doesn't, Bob. Something happened. In settings, you changed...something happened. We never questioned it, never told anybody, never called Verizon, just accepted it, like, 'Guess I got one of those Christmas wreath phones.'”

Alberstadt and his wife, Leslie, learned at 12 weeks that their daughter Eileen had Down syndrome. A few weeks later, an ultrasound revealed a heart defect that would require surgery. The shock was real, but so was the grace: they sought help from other families, did their research, and prayed with a deeper urgency, choosing, day by day, to trust that God was not absent from their story.

Now 4 years old, Eileen has become a living reminder that love is bigger than fear. Alberstadt wants people to see what his family has found on the other side of surprise: “There shouldn't be doom and gloom. There should be happiness because it's a blessing.” Even his comedy gets tested at the kitchen table, because kids are the most honest audience of all.
