So, here's some encouraging news you'll want to know: More people are going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation! John Morales sat down with Laura DeMaria, a Catholic writer and revert to the faith, who brought this exciting news.
A recent poll showed a huge jump in confession attendance. In 2022, only 28% of Catholics were meeting the annual minimum of going once a year. Fast forward to now, and it's up to 42%! Plus, the percentage going monthly went from 10% to 16%. So, what’s behind the confession resurgence? Laura believes people are spiritually searching for more than just Mass attendance: they’re looking for the "spiritual bath" effect of Confession. Laura and John look at it like this: You go in with all that spiritual dirt, like a car covered in grime, and come out shining like new.
How can you make going to confession a habit? Laura suggested treating it like an appointment you can't miss. Look up confession times at nearby parishes, even during the week if you’re in a different neighborhood. Get over that natural discomfort by remembering: Priests don’t remember your sins or judge you. When you confess, they’re standing in persona Christi: so really, it's Jesus listening, offering total forgiveness and mercy. You don't have to be afraid!
Laura and John agree that Confession is life changing. It’s a unique moment to reflect on your shortcomings and receive grace. So, if you haven’t gone lately, think of this as your sign. Christ is waiting for you and wants to bring you home into His loving arms!
