Jamie had never been Catholic—and didn’t even know any Catholics—until a diagnosis stopped her in her tracks. Calling into The Inner Life, she told Patrick Conley and guest Fr. Richard Simon that three years ago she faced advanced breast cancer, feeling “very lost, very afraid.”
While waiting for chemotherapy to begin, Jamie started searching for God and trying to learn who Jesus is. A YouTube video introduced her to the Rosary. She ordered a rosary and taught herself to pray it, carrying it with her through chemo and scans.
After surgery, her doctors reported what they called a “pathological complete response,” meaning the cancer was gone. Jamie’s answer wasn’t complicated: “You have me.” She entered OCIA and, three years later, signed up to serve her parish as a lector.
Father on the program offered a gentle warning not to shrink Catholic life into “a meeting” or “a committee.” “That’s all fine. But it’s about the power of Christ in our life, and you’ve experienced that,” he said. He added that the repeated Hail Mary is a reminder that “the human body is sacred, especially a woman's body.”
Patrick echoed the encouragement: “You are as much a gift to the church as the church is to you.” Jamie’s story is a simple invitation to keep praying, keep trusting, and keep speaking about what God has done.
