We’ve heard plenty of warnings about artificial intelligence taking jobs, spreading misinformation and becoming difficult to control — but now some AI researchers are warning about something much more extreme: that AI could potentially threaten the survival of humanity. A senior researcher at Anthropic recently put the odds of AI causing human extinction within the next decade at more than ten per cent. Simon Blanchette is a McGill lecturer who specializes in AI and the future of work, and he spoke to Andrew Carter.
