There’s a growing battle brewing in Montreal’s nightlife scene. The city is proposing new noise bylaws that some say could threaten the future of downtown venues. Under the changes, fines for noise complaints could jump from $1,500 to as much as $10,000 for a first offense. Even more, police would have the authority to shut down events on the spot after just one complaint if they believe the noise is excessive. Max Honigmann, a nightlife advocate, who’s been speaking out against these proposed changes, spoke to Andrew Carter.

A graduate of the McGill University Faculty of Dentistry, he completed a multidisciplinary residency at the Montreal General Hospital and later taught at McGill as a clinical demonstrator in prosthetics.
