BroadbandWell, how long have I being saying that this NBN is not only a massive waste of money but will be obsolete before it is built?Everyone knows the future is wireless not cableAnd just to hammer the point home Samsung has announced this week that it has developed a new 5G wireless standard hundreds of times faster than today’s 4G networksUsing this technology, Samsung says, it will take just 1 minute to download a full-length feature movieCertainly 5G is a few years away from being released onto the marketBut Samsung expects it to be up and running at least 5 years before the completion of Labor’s NBN in 2025In other words, if Labor has its way, Australia will have spent more than $90 billion to build a cable network which will have been outgunned by much-more-popular and conveniently portable wireless 5G networksThe Coalition has committed to a trimmed-down $20 billion version of Labor’s cable NBNThings are too advanced, too much money already spent, I suppose, for it to be immediately scrapped altogetherBut Coalition policy also includes 3 reviews of the NBN – a strategic review, an audit of broadband policy and a cost benefit analysis by the Productivity CommissionSurely those reviews, which a Coalition Government will take on board, will take this new 5G technology into accountPerhaps it’s still not too late to call this whole NBN fiasco off
