In 1995, the newly elected Ontario government led by premier Mike Harris found itself embroiled in a full-blown crisis. Indigenous protesters were locked in a confrontation with the OPP at Ipperwash Provincial Park in southwestern Ontario. By the time the dust had settled, a demonstrator named Dudley George had been shot and killed, by an OPP officer who was eventually charged with criminal negligence causing death. What are the lessons and legacies of this conflict?
