He's Coming for the Children

View descriptionShare

Ever notice how the people with the strongest, most unyielding opinions about what's best for other people's children so rarely have any children of their own?

James Talarico, the Texas state representative now running for U.S. Senate, spent years building one of the most aggressive records in his state legislature on gender-related policy for minors. In 2021, he stood on the House floor and called a bill restricting so-called "gender-affirming care" for children a "manufactured problem," accusing his Republican colleagues of wasting time on discrimination dressed up as concern. In 2023, he voted against SB 14, the law that ultimately banned puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and surgical procedures for gender transition in minors statewide. As recently as this July, at a Pride event, he called that same law one of the "most dangerous" pieces of legislation to pass in Texas, framing it as a denial of "life-saving healthcare."

In this episode, he's joined by Ryan Bates, a pastor from New Jersey, to discuss the importance of not letting fear consume us. They dive into Psalm 27, exploring how David's words of encouragement can help us navigate life's challenges and find strength in our faith.

Kevin and Ryan discuss the difference between healthy fear and the kind of fear that can hold us back. They examine the biblical concept of courage, which is not about denying reality, but about facing it head-on with faith. The conversation is a powerful reminder that we don't have to be controlled by our fears, but can instead choose to trust in God's presence and power.

As they explore Psalm 27, Kevin and Ryan highlight the importance of understanding the language and context of the passage. They discuss how David's words can be applied to our everyday lives, helping us to overcome obstacles and find peace in the midst of uncertainty.
