In the Lab, a Texans podcast that takes a different look at things. Dr Doherty and John Harris have their lab coats and goggles on and the Bunsen burners burning. Here's Drew.
Oh hey, John, it's good to see you. And it's good to see you. Gentle viewer, gentle listener, good to hear you. This is in the Lab, presented by Exfinity. Even though we're not hearing you, it's great that you're hearing us.
John. How you doing, budd doing okay?
Just getting ready for a trip Sunday to take on those guys up north.
How about to night?
How about that man? This was one that was earmarked ahead of ahead of time. Hey, you're playing the Cowboys're gonna play the Cowboys are gonna play on prime Time. You're gonna play them on Thanksgiving. When you're gonna play, you get them in primetime. You don't get them on Thanksgiving. That's all right. But this is one that I think we can expect to see a healthy robust section of Texans fans, not section, but really spread throughout this one. Now, the Cowboys Stadium at and T Stadium, they have really over the last decade, they've they've had opposing fans come in, and that's like the one to go to a lot of the time unless you're playing Vegas. But it's gonna be loud. It'll be loud. You'll you're gonna see a lot of battle red in the stands. You'll see a lot of the new stuff from the Texans unis in the stands.
It's gonna be fun.
Man.
I can't wait. The last time they played there in the regular season when it was kind of twenty twenty two. He was the last time, and there were good there was a good amount of texts fans, but the organization was in a much different spot. The last time though, in twenty fourteen, when this one went to overtime, and this was a hell of a game. JJ was in his comet season where he was just amazing. Arion Foster was still un excellent back at that point and still healthy enough, and the Cowboys nipped it in overtime because of one of the greatest players I've ever seen by any quarterback, Tony Romo, getting out of a sack and throwing a touchdown. But I can't wait, man, this is so much fun to see. I know both teams are coming off pretty bad losses, but it's still awesome to play your They're not your rival, but they're a team you really want to beat.
Yeah, and I think you're right about the fan influence.
One of the things that I know our fan base was very excited about was after the game in twenty fourteen, Tony Romo saying, man, it was loud in there.
I had to go to the Silide count Yeah. Man, I thought that was pretty interesting.
And I even started seeing post tweets whatever you want to call it on Twitter X that was already leading to this game on Monday. It was like, hey, we got a Monday night football are we got a Sunday night football game against the best team in the league.
Let's save the Dallas stuff for later.
But they're already kind of planning, so hopefully it'll be a a Texan's healthy crowd like it was in twenty fourteen. I remember you and I kind of talked about it later, like, what what was the breakdown of the crowd? Was it like, was it eighty twenty seventy thirty? I felt like it was almost like fifty two forty eight, And I'm not totally sure who had to fifty two.
It was it was akin to a college game.
And I hate to even say this, it was almost akin to what we had the other night because a lot of Lions fans got in that building and it was loud. It was really loud. When that field goal goes through from Jake Bates, you hear a roar and it was I I.
Hate that, but it gave the game.
This really kind of fifty to fifty feel like there was energy on every single play and that you don't get any NFL a lot, and I felt that way in twenty fourteen, where there was energy on both sides. That when the Texans made it play, you got the Texans fans energy, When the Cowboys made it play, you got the Cowboys fan energy. And I think that that's what amped up kind of the big game energy.
Sunday.
We'll see how Cowboys fans show up on a Monday night with their team kind of struggling with owners and good you know, the coaches and the players bickering about who knows what the sun in their eyes?
Well, tonight game, don't worry about that.
Michah Parsons is gonna be ready to go because it's Monday night, he's facing his palace c J.
Stroud.
So there's gonna be a lot in this game against Dallas that I think both sides are. You know, they're gonna want to show up no matter what's the saying throw the records out the window.
I think this is one of those throw the records out the window games.
And hopefully there'll be some guys back for the Texans and that will help and more guys you get back.
Looking not geting Steph Diggs.
Back, which hurts, but you're gonna get some guys back, hopefully in the next couple of weeks, and this will three game stretch that you have before the bye week. I felt like the energy Sunday from the players was mets. I felt like they played, they had a lot of energy that mani By did a lot for them. Yeah, so now you've got these three games, two of them division games.
Hopefully you know, be nice to.
Run the table and go into the buy at nine and four, but you take them one at a time and taking a really good team up in their building on a Monday night, so you know that energy should be really good.
Looking forward to.
That, looking at their stats, it's you say, throw the records out the window they're own for this season at home, they're averaging like fifteen points. Yeah, they're averaging fifteen points a game. They're giving up thirty eight. I'm I'm in the their due camp. I just don't see that. How is that sustainable? I don't see that sustaining itself and keeping going. And that's what that's what kind of gets me worried the most, Not not what I've actually seen with my eyes and what I've seen from that team, but just looking at stats in history, like how is that? How is that even possible? So that's the only thing. I'm not the only thing, but that's that's one of the main things standing out to me. Is goodness, is this gonna? Is this gonna keep holding? I mean even if you're going in there with a different whatever.
You know what I'm saying.
Do you understand what I'm saying here?
Like, well, how is trepidation possible? There should be trepidation when you take on a talented team.
But then but then they don't have their quarterback you know, he's well.
Yeah, I mean, well there you go.
I mean I think that's that's that's a part of it, you know, they lost three games in there with Dak and they got absolutely pummeled by the Lions.
Then they got pummeled by the Eagles.
And they basically got pummeled by the Ravens. Despite the final score, yeah closer and they got So those are embarrassed. Now those are three really good football teams.
Yeah, Texas just went toe to toe with the best team in the league, had a twenty three to seven lead, couldn't score in the second half, but had opportunities, just couldn't score in the second half.
Yeah. So are the sexes on that left.
Well don't know, And I don't know that this is one of those kind of measuring stick games.
I think this is just a game where.
You've got to get back off you got to get back off the schneid, you got to get positive winning vibes going again. But I think the trepidation of facing the Cowboys is absolutely real.
I mean, look, we've never won up there. I mean I think if.
I was there or whether it's uh Texas Stadium, yeah, you never.
I always thinking about that, and I thought about that for the Colts for all those years from two thousand and two to twenty fourteen. You had opportunities to beat the Colts. You had better teams than the Colts, you just couldn't pull it off against the Colts twenty eleven. You've got your best team that you've had in the franchise history, and you can't beat Dan Olafsky on a Thursday night up at Indy. Now this was on a Monday night, so you've got a lot of rest time. You get the bodies right after playing a really physical game against the Lions. It's Wednesday when we're recording, so this is essentially the off day for the team. So you've got to extra day to get the body back together.
And that's for both teams.
The Cowboys have that opportunity as well, but the Cowboys are banged up. They did get Michael Parsons back, I would think, and if we learned anything from the Thursday night game against the Jets that a guy that's been out for a while, give him the second game and he might have his juice back. We found it out with son Reddick. Son Reddick with the Jets first game did nothing like, oh all that time off, he's got all that rust. Well, somehow between the game and our game he shook off that rusty and was outstanding.
So Michael Parsons could do the same.
He didn't do a whole lot against the Eagles, against his hometown team. I think he is going to be primed on a Monday night. And look, you get thinking. We found out in twenty twenty two. A couple interception here, a little short drive there. You know, some quirky things here, some guys stepping up making plays that didn't Amari Rodgers from Jeff driscoll, and all of a sudden you got a leaning the fourth quarter with the ball five yard line, Like, whoa, that's the thing you can't allow to happen against this team. You've got to be better in the red zone. You've got to scorn the flip in second half. This is getting to be a bit a bit much.
It's been bad, but one thing to fall back on is this is a very very good Texans defense, very very good. But when it's at home, it's outstanding. It's excellent. Coming into this this line's game. Quarterbacks were completing the four quarterbacks combined that you'd played in the four games previous combined to have a forty five percent completion rate. They'd get they'd gotten sacked three and a half times per game. You didn't get the sack numbers. The completion rate rose five percent. That's it, five percent. Golf only completed five percent of his passes and he completed five of them to you get five interceptions. This Texans defense at home otherworldly so far this year. And it's not a home game obviously, but like we just led this thing off. You're gonna have a lot of Texans fans in the crowd. It's gonna be loud. That helps out. That's a nice thing. And you're going against a quarterback who is not a starter, not a pro bowler, not one of the highest paid players in the league. You know, you've got a lot of things going for you in that regard. So it all sort of evens out. But what I want to do right now, I want to raise the Medello to playing on Monday Night football again. This is the first time, John since the twenty nineteen regular season opener, the Texans have been on Monday Night football. And it's good to be back. It nice to be back. Texans were there for about a better part of the decade. They would have a Monday Night or pretty much every year and It's going to be back on primetime again, third week in a row, but first time on Monday Night Football since that trip we took to New Orleans back Now it dart things off.
It's not the first time with the Monday Night Crew, true, because we had them on Saturday at Indy last year.
That was Canton.
So you know, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman have seen this team up close a little bit, so that's good.
They'll know him.
But you know, I'm I'm kind of glad. I mean, I'm glad it's the Cowboys. I love playing the Cowboys. I actually love going up to Jerry World. I love that facility. The sun won't bother anybody because it's going to be at night, so that'll be and it's after daylight savings, so you shouldn't have any issues with the sun.
But I think it's an opportunity.
Well, first of all, you know, like you said earlier, never beating him in Dallas and being in Met Texas Stadium, being a met Jerry World. But I think mostly what this team needs to do the Texans, excuse me, is just flying go finance identity again offensively in particular, and I feel like earlier in the season. You started to see it a little bit. Nico Collins was making big plays and hopefully Nico's ready to go. You know, Joe Mixon was running for one hundred the other night. Really couldn't get it done. Now CJ had four sacks then that you could you want to continue to bring down and shouldn't be sacked four times in a game. But I think just this team playing with that same energy, getting some confidence, just going in there and taking care of its business. I mean, I think it gets lost on a lot of people drew the fact that you played that game. Like if you made a list and said, Okay, who are the top ten best non quarterback players on this team? Maybe twelve? So I hesitated it was like ten to twelve, ten top ten to twelve best non quarterbacks on this team. Well, you played that game against the lines without Nico Collins, without Will Anderson.
Junior.
Mario Edwards has played like one of your top dozen players this year.
He was out of that game. You haven't had Christian Harris all year long.
But who will say Henry totoa who's on a player show on Tuesday?
He was fantastic on that show. He's been fantastic all year.
So you know you you went into that game a little bit short handed.
Will you have the lines to that a mutch?
And yeah, but that everybody else, So you were that I must say, severely under man but you know you got twenty three seven lead.
I think that's what frustrated me so much was the fact that.
You were seeing a complete team performance and if CJ can hit tank to make it thirty to thirteen, I think the whole universe changes.
Yeah, the whole thing changes.
And then you walk out of there with a w if you don't get a hold on you know, on the goal line when it's seven to nothing, right, there's.
Four points if you can hold into a field goal instead of those ama Ros Saint Brown screen for a touchdo I mean there's so it was That was a that was one of those one play kind of games, like if this play goes this way, if this play goes that.
Way, if they call, if they make the right call, why did they I still don't understand why that was not a touchback on the the interception and you have the ball at the one.
I don't know it never I don't think anything was ever explained because they went right to a break, so they never really explained it. He started to and then he didn't. So you know, look, the Texans had drops. There were a few key drops in that game. I think the play that really kind of turned it was when Tank was wide open and CJ either didn't see him or just wanted to get a clear shot at him, and then Carlton Davis makes the hell of play. Here's the thing, Carlton Davis shouldn't have been there. They were in to cover three and Carlton Davis is the corner of their side of the field, but he just happened to be paying attention and seeing and was like, you know what, I gotta go.
I gotta help my brothers out.
He did, he made the play, and I think that play changed everything.
Yeah, changed everything.
But you just didn't play a clean game the second half, and we got to make sure that that changes going forward with this team and hopefully bringing Nico Collins back if he's ready to come back. When Will Anderson Junior is ready to come back, Mario Edwards says, I think that's already been announced that he's coming back from his suspension.
So he's got the exemption.
He's got the exemption in one game exemption. So you've got some po things body wise and player wise coming back. Now it's just a matter of cleaning some of the things up. Did you find something with the offensive line fit? I know you didn't run it extremely well, but you faced one of the better interiors.
Yeah, that you're gonna face.
Great Dave DJ Reader got a nice wave into him before the game during warm ups.
Yeah, But Alie McNeil, that's the guy that really good. Yeah, And I don't think that's the guy you're gonna face this week. You're not going to face an Alie McNeil. So we'll see how it goes. But I just want this team to get to playing consistent football week in week out, and.
For sixty minutes. Yeah, for sixty minutes.
And I think if it does that, this team can be pretty dangerous down the stretch, with this nice little three game stretch that you have against teams that have well under a five hundred record.
All right, So with all that in mind, it leads perfectly into our cream.
Of the crop.
The cream of the crop.
Rest in peace.
Macho man ready savage, we missed you, but thank you for the cream of the crop there, but cream of the crop award winner. So we've done this now through the last four weeks and we haven't been able to talk about it win afterwards. But should the Texans fly home victoriously Tuesday morning in the wee hours, it will be because this guy was a cream of the Crop award winner.
I'm gonna go very basic, John.
You just brought up the interior of the Dallas defensive line and how you're not facing in those guys an interior that you just saw last week with Detroit. So give me Joe Mixon. I mean, it's nothing, nothing fancy, but it's a pretty obvious choice. Let's see Joe get back to he made plays Thursday night, wasn't able to run the ball, just didn't have many opportunities, you know, he was met in the backfield too often. So give me Joe Mixon. Let's get back to one hundred yards, Let's get back to a score. Let's get back to grinding and out doing it. That way, it opens everything else up, because we do think some guys are coming back, like you mentioned, and I want Joe Mixon running the ball like he was and keeping it up after the intermission, Okay, the second half, So I'm gonna go with mixing John all.
Right, mine, Yeah, is a guy going back to playing this building for the first time since he was a Dallas Cowboy. Oh, and I feel like he may have wanted to stay Dallas cowboy. But cowboys are like nah Man, we got a couple of tight ends we like, and I think that Dalton Schultz is better than all of them. And I think Dalton Schultz has moments and has had moments in games where he makes the big play, makes the big catch, but I think this could be one of those where he has six for seventy eight as the Cowboys try and figure out covering Nico Collins tank Deel if Nico does play trying to figure out Covernor's receivers, and all of a sudden they end up with linebackers on Dalton Schultz. We Dalton should the other day. If you're gonna put a linebacker on him, he can cook him. I mean he cooked alex anzelonia man coverage and had that big thirty one yard catch. So I'm going with a guy returning to Jerry World for the first time since he was a cowboy, and I hate it because I feel like if anybody could have solved the Sun issue, it would have been on Schultz. But it's game at night, so I'm going Dalton Schultz is my cream of the cropper.
Hey, that's nice. That's a good choice. I like it.
Another one kind of an ancillary choice. His dad was a cowboy for four years or so. He grew up in that area near the Dallas Fort Worth area. Mario Edwards, and he's coming back. So let's see Mario Edwards Junior what he does, because like he talked about, yeah, and he was messing with people before he got the suspension. And it's a welcome edition because we saw fully fight of Cassi get banged up yep on Thursday night or excuse me, Monday night or Sunday night, mixing them up. But let's see what Mario Edwards can do, because I like what he's done prior to the suspension, and I like what he might be able to do. There's always gonna be a little bit of juice when you go back and play in your hometown, when you go back and play for an organization where your dad played, Nobody you can minimize it and say whatever beforehand but that's not true. These guys, there's an extra bit.
Of juice for it. There just is.
Yep, that's exactly us and and that's part of the reason I'm going with Dalton.
I like, I think he's going to have I mean.
He always comes into the game with a lot of focus. I mean that dude man talk about preparation. That guy is all about it. But I just feel like this is one of those weeks where there's some younger linebackers, newer linebackers in the system, and I feel like maybe Dalton gets lost in the shuffle in the passing game and he gets open and ends up having a big ball game.
Looking forward to that absolutely.
All right, John, it's always great to talk with you, and it's always great that you are watching listening out there.
We thank you for some for that.
This is in the Lab presented by Inxfinity.
We had so much fun with it. We'll be back next week.
