Mike Tozer Founder & CEO at Xceptional

View descriptionShare

Discussing the issue of underemployment for people on the autistism spectrum, carving out opportunities for them & creating positive success stories. Xceptional has been recognised as one of the top 20 businesses through Westpac's Businesses of Tomorrow program. Founder Mike Tozer watched his sister who is on the autism spectrum, struggle with work with her skills underutilised. In response to his frustration with the situation he founded Xceptional 18 months ago, a specialist technology company that offers meaningful employment to this uniquely talented group of people who tend to struggle with the traditional interview process. With 65% of autism sufferers in Australia underemployed, Xceptional aims to carve out opportunities for them in niche areas that match their unique skills and way of thinking. At Xceptional, almost all the staff and board either have autism or are inspired by someone they know who has autism. There are 230,000 people in Australia with autism and Xceptional is going through an investment round this year to help fuel their growth.Their goal is to create 1000 employment opportunities by 2020. Most recently Xceptional placed five autistic people in Westpac under an internship program. Now all have been accepted on full time contracts with one already developing an algorithm that has been implemented across the business.  Mike can discuss the issue of underemployment for people on the autistic spectrum, why Australia is lagging behind the rest of the world in terms of closing the gap and some of the positive success stories Mike has enabled.
