Andrew started a computer finance program with Apple and Commonwealth Bank in 1990, when he was 19 and studying at UNSW. (Both still clients 30 years later). This evolved into Student Services Australia, which he still runs.
Andrew also tried to build a student specific share accommodation website and failed. But in the process ended up owning flatmates.com.au. Which he ran for free for 7 years until the relaunch with a business partner. It grew rapidly after the site started charging, and was sold to REA Group in 2016 for $32m.
Andrew thought about retirement at 51 but decided instead to tackle the mess that is superannuation for young people. Backed by family & friends with teenage kids, they launched Student Super Professional Super in February 2018. Studentsuper.com.au.
Andrew also discusses 'Golden Goose Gifting (GGG): "Got a series of enquiries from parents and grandparents about opening an account for really young kids and gifting into it... decided to launch it as a product in Oct 2018. GGG gifting to a baby or child super account, is a fairly unique product. I've been trying to teach uni students about compound interest this year, and have almost given up. I've concluded that compound interest really has a terrible conundrum; Those that understand it, are too old to really use it. Those that are young enough to use it, don't really understand it. Which is why I love GGG. It brings together grandparents and little kids - the guys who really understand compounding with the people who can really get a life-altering impact from it”.
