A brief rundown of January events in music history from The Takin A Walk Podcast.
This month in music history.
I'm Buzznight, the host of Taken a Walk Music History on Foot, and we're taking a walk in the shadow of Fenway Park, the scene of so many great concerts every year. Some of my favorites there have been Springsteen and the Rolling Stones.

On January first, nineteen eighty five, v H one launched January first, nineteen eighty five. That was introduced with a video performance of the Star Spangled Banner by Marvin.

January second, nineteen seventy one, the number one album was Of All Things Must.
Pass by George Harrison. It stayed there for seven weeks.

Version of the Bob Dylan song if Not for You Love That one January third, nineteen forty six, John Paul Jones that they for led Zeppelin, was born in Kent, England. Also on January third, nineteen forty five, Stephen Stills of CSN Y and Buffalo Springfield was born.

Let's go to January fourth, nineteen eighty the Romantics released their self titled debut album containing their signature song to this day, What I Like About You was not a hit, peaked at number forty nine, but a great song nonetheless. Also January fourth, nineteen sixty, Michael Stipe, the frontman for r EM, was born in to Caterer, Georgia. January fifth, nineteen seventy nine, Elvis Costello releases the album Armed Forces. On that one you Remember, Accidents will Happen? Great one, What's so Funny about Peace? Love and Understanding? Love that one so much. January fifth, nineteen seventy three, Bruce Springsteen releases his debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey, and that album contains Blinded by the Light and Spirit in the Night. Also in January of seventy three, another historic one was released with a Boston connection and a Fenway Park connection for sure, Aerosmith released their self titled debut album.
Certainly, one of the most familiar songs is on that One dream On That wasn't a hit.
It peaked at fifty nine, but was re released in seventy five and just goes to show You Where a re release, it reached number six on the charts. January fifth, nineteen fifty Chris Stein, co founder and guitarist for the band Blondie, was born in Brooklyn.

January sixth, nineteen seventy six, another historic one released.
Peter Frampton releases Frampton Comes Alive.
It spent ten non consecutive weeks at number one, and it was the best selling album.
Of nineteen seventy six.
And also January sixth, nineteen sixty eight, the number one album was a magical mystery tour by the Beatles that stayed there for eight weeks. Of course, I Am the Walrus, the Fool on the Hill, or on that one. January seventh, twenty twenty, a sad day of music history. Neil Pert, drummer for Rush, died of cancer at sixty seven years old. Looking at January seventh, nineteen seventy one, Black Sabbath releases the album Paranoid in the US.
Also on that one, War Pigs iron Man I Am iron Man.
January seventh, nineteen forty six. Jon Winner, founder of Rolling Stone magazine, was born in New York City. Let's Go to January eighth, nineteen sixty six. Another number one album by the Beatles, Rubber Soul stay there for six weeks. Drive my Car, Norwegian Wood Nowhere Man Michelle, you won't see me all on that one. January eighth, nineteen forty six. Robbie Krieger, guitarist and songwriter for The Doors, was born in Los Angeles and then also January eighth, nineteen thirty five. Elvis Presley born in Tupelo, Mississippi. We go to January ninth, nineteen eighty four. Van Halen releases the album nineteen eighty four with Jump and Al Wait, Panama and A Hot for Teacher. We go to January ninth, nineteen fifty. David Johansson, frontman for the New York Dolls, was born in New York City, also known as Buster Poindexter and another piece of history on January ninth, nineteen forty four. Jimmy Page, co founder and guitarist Led Zeppelin was born in London, and we go to January tenth, nineteen seventy eight. Fortunate I'm taking a walk in December have on. Brent Smith, frontman for Shinedown. Happy birthday to Brent Smith. We go to January tenth, nineteen forty five. Another great birthday. Rod Stewart was born in London On that day, January eleventh, nineteen ninety two, The number one album was never Mind by Nirvana. Stayed there for two weeks. That included smells like teen Spirit in bloom cumajjre in Lithium. Let's go to January twelfth, nineteen sixty five, Rob Zombie. He was born on that day, and believe it or not, Rob was born in Haveoral, Massachusetts.

January thirteenth, nineteen sixty eight, Johnny Cash recorded the Fulsome Prison Live album at Fulsome State Prison in California. He's also joined on that show by the Statler Brothers and the Great Carl Perkins. We go to January fourteenth, nineteen eighty. Rush releases the album Permanent Waves, which included Spiritor Radio Free Will. January fourteenth, nineteen sixty seven, an event called The Human Being took place in San Francisco. It included speeches from Timothy Leary and Alan Ginsburg, Jerry Rubin, performances by the Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead.

And when I was programming w ZLEX Classic rock station here in Boston, we started putting on something we called the BN That was done at the Hatshell. There we had the remaining members of the band one year, had about fifty thousand people, a lot of fun. January fifteenth, nineteen ninety four, that's the day we lost the great Harry Nilsen, responsible for Without You and Everybody's Talking and.

We talked to Ed Begley Junior, the actor, an activist who was a good friend Harry Nielsen's. He definitely spent some late nights with Harry for sure. January fifteenth, nineteen sixty seven, the Rolling Stones appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and they were forced to change the lyrics, well let's spend the night together, so let's spend some time together. Pretty funny thinking about that now, isn't it. January sixteenth, nineteen eighty eight, we go back to someone that was mentioned previously. Number one song was Got My Mind Set on You by George Harrison. Had stayed there for only a week. Great tune produced by Jeff Lynn from the Electric Light Orchestra, who played bass and keyboard on that one. We go to January seventeenth, nineteen fifty five. That's the birthday for singer songwriter Steve Earle, He was born in Fort Monroe, Virginia. One of his most known songs, Copperhead Road is such a great one. January eighteenth, nineteen seventy eight, Warren Zevon released the album Excitable Boy that included Werewolves of London and Lawyers, Guns and Money. Speaking of great concerts at the opportunity to see him early in his career in Columbus, Ohio.

January nineteenth, nineteen eighty five number one album was Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen. Had stayed there for three weeks that included Glory Days, Dancing in the Dark, Cover Me, and I'm on Fire. Most of those I think Bruce did at Fenway Park at the concert that we referenced a little bit earlier on January nineteenth, nineteen fifty one. Martha Davis remember the vocalist for the Motels. She was born in Berkeley, California. Great songs like Only the Lonely and Suddenly Last Summer. January nineteenth, nineteen forty six. Dolly Parton born in Pittman Center, Tennessee, and boys, she on a roll, Oh my God. She was inducted into the Rock Hall in twenty twenty two. She initially you might recall it, decline the nomination, and Dolly said, let's bring it on well. January twentieth mark's National disc Jockey Day. Now the day honor is the death of Alan Freed, who coined the term rock and roll. He died on that day in nineteen sixty five. But we like talking about it because we come out of the radio business. We love DJs, we love radio folks. So Happy National disc Jockey Day we go to. January twentieth, nineteen sixty four. Another Beatles moment, The Beatles released the album Meet the Beatles, But I Want to hold your Hand. Title track on their plus also Holiday and the Great Boulevard, Have Broken Dreams and you Can't Forget Wake Me when September Ends. From Green Day Great Music. January twenty second, nineteen seventy two, the number one album was American Pie by Don McClain, stayed there for seven weeks. Besides the title track, other song on that one Vincent. January twenty third, nineteen seventy six, David Bowie released the album Stationed to Station, which included Golden Years and TVC one five. January twenty third, nineteen fifty three is when Robin Zander, the front man for Cheap Trick, was born in the Wait, Wisconsin. January twenty fifth, nineteen ninety four is when Alison Chains released the album Jarra Flies, included I Stay Away, No Excuse and Nutshell. January twenty sixth, nineteen fifty five is one of the great Eddie van Halen. He was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We'll never forget the Great Eddie. January twenty seventh, nineteen seventy nine. The number one album was fifty second Street by Billy Joelbert stayed for only a week, had big shot in my life on that one, and we were so pleased. On a previous episode, I've taken a walk to have Mark Rivera Billy Joel's great sideman, one of the real good guys, one of the great talents, but one of the good guys for sure. January twenty eighth, nineteen eighty Another Boston moment is We're in the shadow of the Fenway Jake Giles Band released their album Love Stinks, included the title track and also the version of the song Nighttime Peter Wolf and the Jake Giles Band. January thirtieth, nineteen eighty eight, the number one song was Need You Tonight by the band in Excess and that was the fourth single from the album. Kick Firse three made it to the top ten and then lastly January thirtieth, nineteen sixty nine, We'll close this out a month with so many Beatle moments. That's when the Beatles' last public performance on the Apple Records roof took place. It consisted of nine takes of five Beatles songs, including Get Back Don't Let Me Down.
