Using remastered historic photography, demographic data, and first-hand accounts, Segregation by Design documents the destruction of communities of color due to redlining, highway construction, and mid-century 'urban renewal' schemes in American cities. Highways and 'urban renewal' (aka 'slum clearance') destroyed countless communities across the nation. We are still reckoning with their legacy. In addition to overviewing this history, I will discuss efforts to reverse it, including my collaboration with the organization behind the return of Bruce's Beach in LA, 'a model for reparations.'
