Like hyperpop’s sped-up, distorted, and self-referential lens on traditional pop music, hyperreal visuals have been an artistic undercurrent to today’s mainstream visual language for the past decade. However, as Baudrillard warned, hyperrealism is “the simulation of something which never really existed”—describing our algorithmic present where the perfect representation of something has more cultural currency than its imperfect reality. This session explores strategies for distorting, interrupting, and breaking 3D CGI as a reclamation of humanity in its viewing experience.
