A mandatory smart meter rollout is underway across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT, scheduled to complete by November 2030. The digital electricity meters can be read remotely and will be installed free of charge during the mandatory rollout period, with customers maintaining choice of electricity plans for two years after installation. Time-of-use pricing may suit households that can shift electricity consumption to daytime hours when the grid has excess capacity, though flat-rate pricing options should remain available.
