Outgoing St. Joseph County Health Officer Dr. Robert Einterz made it clear in a farewell Speech Thursday eveing that it was resistance from county political leaders to investing in better health outcomes that pushed him to leave. County Commission President Carl Baxmeyer agrees he and Einterz do not see eye to eye on some issues, but wished him well as he leaves. Dr. Joseph Cerbin will take over April 1st, but has said he can only stay in the job for four months. Tik Tok's CEO took a grilling on Capitol Hill Thursday from lawmakers of both parties worried about security issues due to Chinese ownership of the social media platform. The CEO says Tik Tok is moving all US data and operations to the US, operated by US companies with Amercian employees. Lawmakers say they still worry the Chinese government can still access information on US users if it wants to. About 150 million Americans use Tik Tok regularly. Utah has become the first state to require teens to get parental permission before joining social media sites. The law signed by the Governor Thursday imposes a digital curfew, blocking sites for minors past 10:30 p.m. It'll also blackout ads for underage accounts and compel social media companies to allow parents access to their children's profiles. Critics wonder if it's possible to enforce the law. Michigan State bowed out of the NCAA tournament last night in a 98-93 overtime loss to Kansas State. Other games last night: Florida Atlantic over Tennessee, UConn over Arkansas, and Gonzaga over UCLA. Four more Sweet 16 games are on tap tonight, and by Sunday night, we will know the Final Four. Advocates for Portage Manor have a couple of months to get a plan together that will persuade county government not to close its only publicly owned residential facility for poor and handicapped people. A group of advocates is working on plans for who will own the facility and how it will be funded. The County Council last week delayed a vote on closing Portage Manor for 60 days to give the group some time to come up with a plan. Swiss banking giant UBS is buying rival Credit Suisse for around 3 billion dollars, reportedly about 60% less than the bank is worth in a bid to protect the country's economy and the world banking system. Credit Suisse shareholders will take the hit, after confidence in Credit Suisse collapsed last week when it admitted to poor bookkeeping that hid losses. A frozen fruit recall involves an organic tropical fruit blend sold at Trader Joe's stores nationwide and organic strawberries sold under five different brand names including Costco's Kirkland Signature and Aldi's Simply Nature. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been five cases of Hepatitis A, all in Washington state, with all five patients reportedly having eaten frozen organic strawberries. Notre Dame women's basketball earned its way into the NCAA's Sweet 16 Sunday with a 53-48 win over Mississippi State at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish continue play this Saturday against Maryland in Greenville, South Carolina. The Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast Conferences are down to one team each after the opening weekend of the NCAA Mens's Basketball Tournament. Michigan State represents the Big Ten after a 69-60 win over Marquette Sunday. The Spartans face Kansas State Thursday. Purdue infamously lost to 16 seed Farleigh Dickinson Friday, and Indiana bowed out in the second round last night, 85-69 against lone ACC survivor Miami.

Voters in School City of Mishawaka's district will decide in May whether to keep current taxes in place to support the system. This is a renewal vote on a funding measure passed in 20-16, and will not increase anyone's current tax rate. The money has been used to fund technology upgrades, educational programs, and staff raises. A renewal would keep about 2.7 million dollars a year flowing for the next eight years. The vote comes in the May primary. Sixteen new South Bend police officers were sworn in Wednesday, returning the department to full staffing for the first time since before the pandemic. The department is budgeted for 240 officers, with 247 now employed. But coming retirements this year and next will bring that number down. 51 new officers were hired last year. The U-S State Department says a collision between a Russian fighter jet and a U-S drone over the Black Sea was likely accidental. A spokesman called the Russian pilot incompetent as he and a colleague shadowed the drone, which was gathering intelligence on Russia from over international waters. The drone is in deep water, and it's not clear if it can be recovered. The Russians say they will try. NCAA Tournament scores from Wednesday: Fairleigh Dickinson over Texas Southern, 84-61, and Arizona State dominated Nevada, 98-73. The main draw begins first round play today, with a total of 16 games on tap at four sites across the country, followed by 16 more tomorrow. Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan State all play tomorrow. A lot of us will be a little groggy this morning as we need a few days to adjust to the time change over the weekend. Clocks moved forward an hour Sunday morning for Daylight Time, and that means your body clocks thinks it's 5am when it's really six. A bank collapse in California's Silicon Valley last week is the biggest since the housing recession 15 years ago, and the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department are taking steps to make sure it doesn't spread. They announced Sunday that all deposits, even the uninsured ones, will be covered, as another bank in New York was closed by regulators on Sunday. At the Oscars last night, the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once won a lot of the major awards, including best picture, best directing, best actress for Michelle Yeoh, and best supporting actor and actress. Best Actor went to Brendan Fraser in The Whale. Sports: the Purdue Boilermakers are the top seed in their region of the NCAA Tournament after the bracket was revealed Sunday evening. The Indiana Hoosiers are a four seed, and Michigan State is a seven seed. All three play their opening games Friday. The Notre Dame women will host first and second round NCAA games at Purcell Pavilion, as the three seed in their region. The Indiana Hoosier women are a one seed, hosting first and second round games in Bloomington. NBA: the Indiana Pacers are at Detroit tonight. Michigan's House of Representatives voted Wednesday evening to repeal the state's Right to Work law, passed by Republicans in 20-13 during former Governor Rick Snyder's administration. If it passes the Senate and Governor Gretchen Whitmer approves it, the measure will restore labor union's rights to charge dues to people they represent. Democrats say it restores the right to union representation. Republicans say it would stifle competition and suffocate economic development. Brace yourself for at least one more round of snow as spring nears. Expect wet heavy snow overnight tonight and during the morning rush hour tomorrow. Temperatures will hover near the freezing mark during the night. Stay weather aware for the next 24 to 30 hours. The CEO of American Airlines tells pilots that they will match recent pay increases at Delta. Delta's pilots ratified a four-year contract last week with 34% in cumulative raises. CEO Robert Isom promised the "same profit-sharing formula" to American's pilots in a Tuesday message, as well as better scheduling. With airlines profitable again after the pandemic, workers are trying to make up for lost wages. Conference tournaments continue in college basketball this week, leading up to selection Sunday, when the NCAA Tournament field will be announced. Police have made an arrest in the death of a security guard at a downtown South Bend parking garage. 62 year old Robert Pulliam was shot and killed in the Wayne Street garage Sunday night, but a picture of a license plate on his phone helped lead police to 33-year old Derrick Pratcher in Michigan, where he was arrested Monday. Pratcher is charged with murder and other charges. A rare sight in Washington Monday, as leading Democratic and Republican Senators both took aim at Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell's warning that interest rates will have to go higher to check inflation. Progressive Elizabeth Warren and conservative Joe Kennedy both charged that the rate increases will put up to two million people out of work. Powell's response, in a nutshell: inflation hurts everybody, not just those who lose jobs, and it has to be dealt with. Attorney General Merrick Garland is filing an antitrust lawsuit to block JetBlue's $3.8 billion merger with Spirit Airlines. He says the merger would limit consumer options and increase airfares. The merger would create the nation's fifth-largest airline. New York, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia also joined the lawsuit. Mike Brey's 23 seasons leading Notre Dame basketball came to an end last night, as the Irish lost to Virginia Tech 67-64 in the opening round of the ACC Tournament, ending their season. Effective immediately, Eli Lilly has announced it will soon cap costs for its most popular insulin products at $35 per month. High prices have driven some diabetics to ration the drug, in some cases with disastrous consequences. People without insurance will be eligible as long as they sign up for Eli Lilly’s copay assistance program. President Biden has been pushing drug companies to curb prices on essential drugs. A Clay High School teacher faces child seduction and other felony charges, after prosecutors say he sent nude pictures of himself to a 15 year old student in November and December. 25 year old Caleb Long is also accused of sending lewd text messages and of kissing the student. He was put on leave December 7th, and has since been fired. A bright note in an otherwise disappointing season at Purcell Pavilion last night, as Notre Dame players sent Coach Mike Brey out in his final home game with an 88-81 win over 25th ranked Pitt. The Irish finish the regular season at Clemson Saturday, and barring a miraculous run, his Notre Dame career will end in next week's ACC Tournament. There will soon be a new mayor in Chicago. Incumbent Democrat Lori Lightfoot conceded last night after finishing third in a crowded primary. Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas advance to a runoff election April 4th. Johnson is supported by the teacher's union, and Vallas was endorsed by the police union. Lightfoot became the first Black woman to be elected mayor of Chicago four years ago. Two members of Congress are introducing a bill to tighten safety standards for trains carrying hazardous materials. Currently, many safety rules only apply to trains with hazardous substances in 35 cars. This new mandate would lower the threshold to cover any railcar carrying the stuff. It's all in response to the derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Kobe Bryant's widow Vanessa has settled her claim with Los Angeles County over his death for nearly 29 million dollars. This is about photos that members of law enforcement shared with each other - and some others - after the 2020 helicopter crash that killed Bryant, their daughter and seven others. Federal safety officials blamed the crash on pilot error. Coach Niele Ivey and four of her players earned All-ACC honors Tuesday. Ivey is coach of the year in her third season leading Notre Dame women's basketball. The campus shooting spree at Michigan State University two weeks ago has campus security people across America evaluating their plans and procedures for dealing with something similar on their campuses. At IU in Bloomington, security people say they have plans in place if anything like that happens on any IU campus, but they admit it's more about response than prevention. Public access is the rule on most college campuses, with little or no way to stop anyone from getting onto the property or into many buildings. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was in Ukraine Monday, making an unannounced trip to Kyiv a week after President Biden's surprise visit. She announced a transfer of $1.25 billion in her meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, part of a $45 billion package Congress passed in December. Yellen says the U.S. can’t allow Ukraine to lose the war because of “economic reasons” when they’re making so much progress on the battlefield. A New Jersey congressman wants airlines to get rid of surprise costs for travelers. Congressman Josh Gottheimer urges the Transportation Department to force airlines to show the full price of a plane ticket upfront. This after President Biden took aim at "junk fees" across all industries in his State of the Union address. A big question for Notre Dame women's basketball this week is the health of starting point guard Olivia Miles, who hurt her knee in Sunday's regular season-ending win over Louisville. The Energy Department says it's not 100 percent certain, but the most likely source for the COVID pandemic is a laboratory leak in Wuhan, China. The Department also says it does not believe the virus was part of any Chinese biological weapons program. COVID has killed more than seven million people worldwide, more than a million in the U.S. A major winter storm has left parts of Southern California with highway closures and almost 27,000 power outages in Los Angeles County. New weather records include downtown Los Angeles's wettest February day since 2003, LA's first blizzard warning since 1989 and San Diego's first blizzard warning EVER. Snow has been recorded as low as a thousand feet above sea level, and Big Bear Mountain got 100 inches of snow last week, more than their yearly average. More rain and snow there through Wednesday. A new study finds daily marijuana use can increase a person’s risk of Coronary Artery Disease. The study, led by a Stanford University researcher, found daily cannabis users were nearly 35% more likely to be diagnosed with coronary artery disease than those who have never used the drug. But it also concluded people who use marijuana once a month or less were at no significant risk. Notre Dame women's basketball won the ACC regular season title Sunday with a 68-65 win at Louisville. The Irish will open conference tournament play Friday against the winner of Thursday's NC State-Syracuse game. Indiana Senator Todd Young visited the AM General military assembly plant in St. Joseph County Thursday, ahead of a production startup for a run of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, similar in some ways to the Humvees the plant used to produce. The contract will cover about 20 thousand of the new vehicles, with potentially hundreds of jobs tied to the production run. First deliveries to the military are expected in about a year and a half. Federal investigators looking into the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio say it was quote: 100 percent preventable. It appears an overheated bearing in a freight car axle caused the derailment, and better maintenance and stronger warning systems could have prevented the wreck. The train was not speeding, and no problems have been found with the track. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was there Thursday. Roughly two million Cosori Air Fryers are being recalled over fire and burn hazards. Thursday’s announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety and Commission is coupled with similar recalls in Canada and Mexico. The air fryers were sold between 2018 and 2022 in Target, Home Depot, and Best Buy stores, as well as on Amazon. Nearly 1700 flights were canceled and another 6,000 delayed yesterday because of weather issues across the U-S. FlightAware says 1100 flights have already been canceled for today. Southwest, SkyWest, and Delta have the highest numbers of cancellations. The Department of Transportation says anyone whose flight is canceled has the right to a refund, regardless of the type of ticket booked. It looks like Democratic candidate Bruce Mitchell will be on the May primary ballot for a South Bend common council seat, after a split vote by the county election board. The local Democratic party ruled him ineligible under a new state law that requires a party candidate to vote in two preceding party primaries, which Mitchell has not. The three members split 1-1, with an abstention by the third member, County Clerk Amy Rolfes. Without a clear vote to ban him, Mitchell appears to be headed for the Democratic ballot. Tesla is moving back to California. as owner Elon Musk apparently wants his two main businesses closer together. Musk moved Tesla to Austin Texas in 20-21 after a dispute with California over COVID restrictions. The company will now be close to Twitter headquarters in Palo Alto. Once again, Notre Dame men's basketball came close, but couldn't pull out the win in a 63-59 home loss to North Carolina at Purcell Pavilion. In Minnesota, Minneapolis schools have already moved to e-learning for the rest of the week. Major airlines are saying they’ll waive additional fees for travelers who need to rebook because of the weather. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says the water in East Palestine is safe to drink, following that recent train derailment. He and EPA Administrator Michael Regan visited a resident's home and drink water from her tap to demonstrate their confidence. DeWine and the governor of Pennsylvania have also made a "criminal referral" against Norfolk Southern Railroad for the spill. President Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin traded barbs in separate speeches yesterday. In Poland, Biden said Russia will never subdue Ukraine, while in Moscow, Putin called the war a western effort to take over Russia. College basketball: 17th ranked Indiana went out to an early lead, but an emotional Michigan State team and crowd dominated after that in an 80-to-65 Spartans win in East Lansing. President Biden is back in Poland today after an unannounced visit to Ukraine Monday. Biden says he wanted to show his support for Ukraine's resistance to the year old Russian invasion. He took a ten hour train ride each way because it's not safe to fly in the war zone, and the trip was not announced until he had left. Biden will address NATO allies today in Warsaw. They call it a balanced calendar, but to a lot of parents it means year around school, and that's what South Bend's Empowerment Zone is considering. The Empowerment Zone consists of four west side elementary schools feeding Navarre Middle School, threatened by a possible state takeover if academics don't improve sufficiently. The balanced calendar would reduce summer break to five weeks, and give students and teacher longer breaks during the school year, totaling the same number of instruction days the other schools have. A first generation iPhone still sealed in its original box went for more than $63,000 at auction over the weekend. The original owner said it was a gift, but she never opened it since she had already gotten a new phone. Other first-generation iPhones have been reportedly sold at auction for more than $35,000. The eight-gigabyte phone originally sold for less than $600 when it was introduced in 2007, 15 years ago. Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman Monday defended his handling of the hiring of an offensive coordinator, saying Utah's Andy Ludwig was his first choice for the job before he decided to stay at Utah. Freeman introduced Irish tight ends coach Gerad Parker as the new offensive coordinator. The Indianapolis Colts are finalizing a deal to bring in Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator under new coach Shane Steichen. Two of the students wounded in last week's Michigan State campus shootings have had their conditions upgraded by hospitals. One is now in fair condition, another is serious but stable. Three more remain in critical condition. Three others were killed in two separate locations, apparently by the same gunman, who later took his own life after being confronted by police in Lansing. Two weeks after the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the death toll stands at more than 46-thousand, and still climbing as crews continue to go through the rubble of thousands of buildings. Turkey has now pretty much ended rescue operations, believing there is likely no one left alive, and turned to recovery and rebuilding, as criticism mounts of government corruption and slow response. Things are worse in war-torn Syria. Former President Jimmy Carter has entered hospice care. His grandson says the 98 year old Carter has decided to forego further medical intervention and spend his remaining days with wife Rosalyn and family in the Plains, Georgia home they built in 1961. Carter was president from 1977 to 1981, defeating Gerald Ford to win the office, and losing four years later to Ronald Reagan. Notre Dame football will formally introduce Gerad Parker as its new offensive coordinator today, as he and head coach Marcus Freeman meet with reporters later this morning. Parker steps up from tight ends coach. Basketball: the 10th ranked Notre Dame women dominated at Pittsburgh Sunday, winning 83-to-43. The Irish men lost Saturday at Virginia, 57-55. Some pretty sophisticated counterfeit money has been passed around Elkhart the last few weeks. Police say the criminals apparently take real ten dollar bills, wash them to remove all the ink, and reprint them at 50s or 100s. That means they pass the usual pen test for real money paper, and look very real. A number of businesses in the Elkhart area are now refusing to take any bills higher than 20s from customers, after they got burned. The state of Indiana has agreed to implement changes to its absentee voter system to better accommodate people with disabilities. Until now, voters who can't see well had to have a poll worker visit them at home to assist with voting. Under the agreement, the state will implement a computer system compatible with technologies already out there, so people can truly vote privately. This all came about as a result of a 20-20 lawsuit by several disabled voters. In addition to his involuntary manslaughter charges, actor Alec Baldwin now faces a lawsuit by Halyna Hutchins' family for her death on the set of the film "Rust" in New Mexico. Her parents and sister are being represented by celebrity attorney Gloria Allred. The suit alleges negligence, battery, intentional affliction of emotional distress, and more. Parents and teachers from South Bend schools that could soon be closed or repurposed sounded off at a community meeting last night, pleading for the system to preserve neighborhood access to schools, along with programs they say can and should serve students across the district. South Bend schools are struggling to cope with continuing enrollment declines and the resulting loss of state funding that comes with it, plus the effect of tax caps on the budget. Many schools have far fewer students than they could handle. The death toll in that big earthquake in Turkey and Syria now tops 15 thousand, as hope diminishes of finding people alive in the rubble of hundreds of buildings across southern Turkey and northwest Syria. At least three Americans are among the dead. Aid workers are struggling to reach victims in war-torn Syria. At least one medical professional says that Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin will be able to play NFL football again. Dr. Thom Mayeris the NFL Players Association medical director. The 24-year-old Hamlin went into cardiac arrest last month after making a tackle during a game in Cincinnati. He was discharged from the hospital a week later. A St. Joseph County Probate Judge is facing seven misconduct charges from the state of Indiana. Judge Jason Cichowitz is charged with financial conflict of interest for his work as a lawyer and judge. The Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications claims Cichowitz used money from client Russell Cartwright to renovate the Juvenile Justice Center, with much of the work done by Cichowicz's father's firm. The Judge's lawyer says it was all above board and with the client's knowledge and consent. The State Supreme Court will decide on any punishment. Eight more officers with the Memphis Police Department will likely be charged following death of Tyre Nichols. Memphis City Attorney Jennifer Sink says the officers are expected to receive a statement of charges by the end of the week. There are also reports that former Memphis police recruiters were so desperate to fill jobs the past few years that standards were significantly lowered. Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says he will not seek a US Senate seat in Michigan next year. Buttigieg is currently Transportation Secretary in the Biden Administration, and he says he loves his current job. Buttigieg and husband Chasten recently bought a house near Traverse City, near Chasten's family. LeBron James is now the leading scorer in NBA history, after scoring 38 points last night to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was there to witness. James is in his 20th NBA season. For those keeping track, his career point total is now 38,890, and counting. The Lakers lost to Oklahoma City, 133-130. The Chicago Bulls fell to the Grizzlies in Memphis, 104-89.
