Todd Muller on the pressure of politics

There's no naming and shaming on this episode of Sunday Sanctuary. Instead, we're here to name what causes us shame and realise that we can move through it. To kick off this episode, Petra brings back an old segment of the show called Atlas of the Heart, where Grace McArthur digs into Brené Brown's book of the same name. Later on, Rev. Spanky Moore joins to explore the experience of shame and one experience he had of moving through.

In-between there is a sacred text from author Hanya Yanagihara, a time for self-reflection and waiata from Sade and Michael Kiwanuka. Haere mai!

Brené Brown's shame resilience exercise:
Recognise shame - Can you recognise what it feels like? What triggered it?
Become aware - Can you reality check the messages shame is telling you? Are they actually true?
Reach out - Share your story with a trustworthy person. Open yourself up to receiving empathy.
Unpack - Explain how it made you feel.

Sacred Text:

An excerpt from Hanya Yanagihara's 2015 novel A Little Life

Music:
You are the Gold by Terrible Sons (intro song)
Instrumental by The Fuzzy Robes
Tesifa by Laney Tripp
Cold Little Heart by Michael Kiwanuka
Peace Piece by Bill Evans Trio
Like a Tattoo by Sade
Rivers That You Cannot See by North Americans

Naming Shame

Addiction is such a huge topic which can't be covered properly in one episode, so this episode of Sunday Sanctuary is primarily for those in the orbit of people struggling with addiction. How can we support those who we know are struggling? Do we need to seek support for ourselves?

To start off, Producer Sam hit the streets to talk to everyday people about their experiences with addiction. Later on, Petra Bagust talks to Rev. Petra Zaleski, an Anglican priest and spiritual care practitioner. Petra has a graduate diploma in addictions and mental health as well as lived experience with alcoholism.

Come for the compassionate support for loving those in the grips of addiction and stay for the 'sacred text' from the film The Outrun as well as music from James Brown and Lily Allen.

Changing your mind about what you want for dinner is easy. Changing your mind about what you think about someone, how you vote, or what you believe, is not. In this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, Petra talks with friend of the show Spanky Moore and producer Sam talks to Jesuit priest Father Michael Smith in search of some guidance through the process of re-evaluating our opinions.

Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong by Gene Harris

Can I Change my Mind by Tyrone Davis
