Friendship Across the Divide

There's no naming and shaming on this episode of Sunday Sanctuary. Instead, we're here to name what causes us shame and realise that we can move through it. To kick off this episode, Petra brings back an old segment of the show called Atlas of the Heart, where Grace McArthur digs into Brené Brown's book of the same name. Later on, Rev. Spanky Moore joins to explore the experience of shame and one experience he had of moving through.

In-between there is a sacred text from author Hanya Yanagihara, a time for self-reflection and waiata from Sade and Michael Kiwanuka. Haere mai!

Recognise shame - Can you recognise what it feels like? What triggered it?
Become aware - Can you reality check the messages shame is telling you? Are they actually true?
Reach out - Share your story with a trustworthy person. Open yourself up to receiving empathy.

Naming Shame

Addiction is such a huge topic which can't be covered properly in one episode, so this episode of Sunday Sanctuary is primarily for those in the orbit of people struggling with addiction. How can we support those who we know are struggling? Do we need to seek support for ourselves?

Petra Zaleski, an Anglican priest and spiritual care practitioner. Petra has a graduate diploma in addictions and mental health as well as lived experience with alcoholism.

Addiction is such a huge topic which can't be covered properly in one episode, so this episode of Sunday Sanctuary is primarily for those in the orbit of people struggling with addiction. How can we support those who we know are struggling? Do we need to seek support for ourselves?
