My Mother-In-Law Will Gamble Away Their Retirement. What Can We Do? | How To Protect Ageing Parents From Financial Harm

What do you do when someone you love is about to receive a life-changing inheritance... but you're genuinely worried it could disappear?

In this episode of Start Here, I answer one of the most heartbreaking questions I've ever received.

A listener shares her fears that her in-laws—both in their early seventies with no home, no superannuation and very little financial security—are about to inherit around $700,000. Instead of feeling relieved, she's terrified. She believes her mother-in-law has a long history of gambling, her father-in-law has very little control over the family's finances, and this inheritance could be their last opportunity for a secure retirement.

But this episode isn't just about gambling.

It's about something much bigger.

It's about protecting the people we love while respecting their independence.

Because for your family, it might not be gambling. It could be compulsive spending, shopping addiction, alcohol or drug dependency, romance scams, investment scams, online fraud, cognitive decline or financial abuse.

So how do you help without taking over?

In this episode, I'll walk you through:
How to recognise the warning signs of financial abuse and financial vulnerability.
Why more money doesn't solve behavioural problems—it often magnifies them.
The legal realities every family needs to understand before trying to step in.
The importance of seeking legal advice, financial advice and professional addiction support.
Practical ways to build financial guardrails around an inheritance.
How to have difficult conversations with ageing parents in a compassionate and respectful way.
Why healthy boundaries aren't selfish—they're essential.
The steps you can take now to help protect your parents' financial future before a crisis occurs.

This is one of the most emotional and important Start Here episodes I've ever recorded, and I hope it gives anyone facing a similar situation the confidence to start the conversation.

Because sometimes the greatest act of love isn't giving someone money.

It's helping protect it.
