What happens when you reach 65 and your finances don't look anything like the retirement plan you thought you'd have?

Today's Start Here question comes from a 65-year-old woman who is single, still working FIFO and still has a mortgage. After attempting retirement at 60, she discovered that the lifestyle she'd imagined left her feeling isolated — and she spent a significant amount of her superannuation in the process.

She returned to work, bought a home and started rebuilding.

Now she's worried about what would happen if her income disappeared before she's financially ready to retire.

Most importantly, we challenge the idea that retirement success simply means reaching a certain age with a paid-off home and a huge super balance.

Sometimes retirement doesn't go according to plan. Sometimes the life you thought you wanted turns out not to suit you. And sometimes you find yourself starting again much later than expected.

That doesn't mean the only answer is deprivation or desperately trying to make up for lost time.

Perhaps financial freedom at this stage of life isn't necessarily about stopping work.

It's about reaching the point where you no longer have to work.

Because the goal isn't simply to retire.

It's to build enough security, income, connection and choice to create a next chapter that actually works for you.
