Feeling Broke Despite a Good Income

The Illusion of Financial Security

Breaking the Cycle: Practical Steps

The Power of Small Savings

Setting Exciting Financial Goals

A Message of Hope and Empowerment

Closing Remarks and Call to Action

You earn good money. On paper, you're doing well.

So why does payday arrive… only for you to find yourself counting down the days until the next one?

In this episode of Start Here, I answer a listener who earns $120,000 a year but regularly has nothing left at the end of their pay cycle — and sometimes relies on Buy Now Pay Later just to maintain their social life.

And they are certainly not alone.

With housing, groceries, insurance and everyday living costs taking an increasingly large bite out of our income, it can feel incredibly frustrating to earn what looks like a great salary and still struggle to get ahead.

But there's another side to this conversation too.

Lifestyle creep, social media, Buy Now Pay Later and simply losing track of where our money is actually going can quietly make an already difficult financial environment even harder.

In this episode, I cover:

Why you need to stop making spending decisions based on your gross salary and start working with your actual take-home pay

How social media can distort what a “normal” lifestyle looks like

The question to ask yourself before your next social-media-inspired purchase

Why regularly relying on Buy Now Pay Later or credit cards can be a warning sign that your lifestyle has outgrown your cash flow

Why I want you to review 12 months of transactions — not just one month — to see the true cost of your lifestyle

How to find savings in your budget and immediately redirect them towards your financial progress

Why your first priorities should be paying off BNPL debt, building a financial float and creating emergency savings

Why even $20 a week matters — and why no small saving is beneath you

The importance of giving yourself an exciting, meaningful financial goal once your foundations are in place

How to stop feeling like budgeting is about deprivation and instead use it to choose what you want more

Most importantly, I want you to remember this:

Your financial life is not frozen in time.

Your income can change. Debts can be paid off. Careers progress. Children grow up. Expenses disappear. Economic conditions change.

And you will change too.

You will understand your spending better. You'll become clearer on what you genuinely value. You'll build savings, learn from mistakes and become more confident with your money.

So if you're feeling broke despite earning good money, don't throw in the towel.

Start with what actually lands in your bank account. Look honestly at where it's going. Stop adding to expensive debt. Build your financial float and emergency savings — even if you can only start small.

Then give yourself something exciting to work towards.

Because financial progress starts when you learn to keep some of the money you already earn.

Find that little gap between what comes in and what goes out, redirect it back towards yourself and your goals — and start building from there.
