In 1981, a Japanese literature student by the name of Issei Sagawa was studying in Paris when he befriended the woman of his dreams, Renee Hartevelt.
Sagawa, who had been plagued with fantasies of cannibalism since a young age, would eventually lure and attack Hartevelt; before proceeding to violate, murder, and eat her remains.
Yet perhaps what is most peculiar and infuriating about this case, is that Sagawa was never punished for his crime, and even went on to be somewhat of a celebrity in Japan.
