Meta (META) boosted its capital spending outlook and announced plans for a new class of nonvoting stock, escalating its already-stratospheric bet on artificial intelligence. Meta shares rose more than 6% in after-hours trading on Wednesday. They had gained about 6% this year through the close in New York.
Tesla (TSLA)’s third-quarter profit beat estimates, potentially assuaging concerns about the electric vehicle maker’s increased investment into new areas such as robots and artificial intelligence. The results give Tesla some breathing room as it chases Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk’s futuristic vision of self-driving cars and humanoid robots. Shares initially rose in postmarket trading. 
IBM (IBM) reported sales that topped analysts’ estimates, saying it had recovered most of the infrastructure deals that were delayed earlier this year. The shares gained about 5% in extended trading after closing at $251.46 in New York. The stock declined 15% this year through Wednesday’s close.

The beat was driven by substantial growth in its artificial intelligence and satellite internet businesses.
Netflix (NFLX) reported its slowest sales jump in three years and forecast a fourth consecutive quarter of slowing growth, a projection that amplifies concerns about the performance of the world’s leading online TV network. The shares slid on Wednesday in New York. The stock is down 30% this year, compared with a 13% gain in the S&P 500.
Super Micro (SMCI) jumped after the company reported preliminary quarterly results that topped analysts’ estimates. The server maker said sales will be $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion in the quarter that ended Sept. 30. Analysts, on average, estimated $15 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Gross margins will be in the range of 12% to 12.5%, Super Micro said Tuesday in a statement.

Musk said the boards of both companies had formed special committees to consider the idea of a combination, but cautioned that getting enough support from Tesla shareholders may be tricky.

- Abbot Laboratories (ABT) shares drop. Abbott plans to spin off its nutrition unit into a separate publicly traded company through a tax-free distribution to shareholders. The new company will have annual sales of about $8.5 billion from its key brands, including Pedialyte and Ensure, and will be led by Daniel Salvadori as chief executive officer. The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2027 and will allow the new company to adapt to changes in the nutrition industry "faster and more efficiently and effectively as an independent company".
