When I was 10 years old I had a tragedy in my life that affected me for the next 40 years. My brother Michael was hit by a school bus & died from his injuries. I realised that my parents were distraught & I took it upon myself to make sure my parents were always happy. That was my defining moment, I became a people pleaser that day.
As a people pleaser, I took things personally, & I was a control freak with a short temper. I needed the recognition & approval for the things I was doing to please the others. For the next 40 years I would try to please everybody, & you can’t, but I would rationalise that I was doing it for the greater good only to come back later to recognise that the word ‘rationalise’ is really two words: ‘rational’ & ‘lies’. You lie to yourself that it’s rational to do things that go against your core belief because you want to please somebody else or your ego. Now, I ask myself if what I’m doing is telling a rational lie.
We are all living in instant gratification mode of life, we want things to go from A-Z overnight instead of recognising you’ve got to go A-B-C-D. I didn’t lose 65lbs in 1 day, that first month of working out was a killer, but my ‘why’ was big enough that I wanted to change where I was going. Every time you say “I can’t” you’re admitting to yourself that you’re not worthy instead of saying “how can I?”
