With more than 50,000 runners, the TCS New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world. But New York Road Runners, which organizes the event, does more than stage a single race across the city. It organizes more than 50 events annually, including two large half marathons, and is about to launch a new 5K in New Jersey. Leading the charge is Michael Capiraso, who has been president and CEO since 2015. Capiraso has also been a staunch advocate for NYRR’s programs in area schools and has supported programs such as virtual racing that allow participants to run one of the organization’s races from anywhere in the world. In this podcast with SportsTravelEditor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz, Capiraso discusses the logistics of organizing the New York City Marathon, what event organizers at all levels can take away from what NYRR has learned over the years and how he’s somehow been able to run 27 consecutive marathons while he’s been organizing them at the same time.
