We hear it so often - where are kids supposed to go when they just want to the play sport for fun? Once you get to 18+, there are a HUGE amount of social sport opportunities. But well before that, once the Auskicks and the Net Set Go stops, and the grading begins, where are kids who aren't competitive meant to play? Some Saturdays you may be on the sidelines of kids sport and wonder if you've accidentally turned up to the AFL Grand Final. Or the Super Netball GF. Or even game 5 of the Ashes. Because the level of parent involvement is just, well, INTENSE. Be it yelling, taunting, or even having a crack at the ref, parent behaviour is a real issue in kids sport. Robyn Smith is someone who's track record in the inclusion space is second to none - CEO of Sport Inclusion Australia for 34 years, Assistant Chef de Mission for Sydney 2000 Paralympics, Member of the International Paralympic Committee, Governing Board Member of Virtus Sports....the list of her work is extensive and enduring. She's as passionate about grassroots sports inclusion for people with an intellectual disability, as she is about Brisbane 2032 and the opportunity for all our Paralympians. Royal Life Saving Australia recently released a report that had some pretty disturbing statistics, including the fact that most primary school kids can't swim 50m by the end of primary school.
