Our guests are Ido Kedar and Tracy Kedar. Ido Kedar is a non-speaking Autistic Young Man. He is a phenomenal 23-year-old Californian who, through the saving grace of technology and perseverance, now has a voice in his life and is using it to lobby for huge changes. He is an author and advocate who inspires and educates others. Tracy Kedar, Ido's mother, shares with us her journey as the parent of a non-verbal child with severe autism. Imagine this: Your child is 7 years old and cannot speak one word. He is trapped, misunderstood, and living in the silent world of autism.  That was the unimaginable reality that Tracy & Sharon Kedar experienced with their son, Ido. Until there was a breakthrough. While Ido was unable to talk due to motor apraxia and would flap his hands and make strange noises, no one knew he was fully aware of everything going on around him – and – he completely understood everything that was being said about him.  He just could not verbalize because of his severe disability.  Then one day Ido showed his parents that he had theory of mind, he was capable, and he was smart. He communicated by pointing on a low-tech laminated letterboard to spell words.  Later, through advances in computer technology, he learned to use an iPad so he could “voice” his thoughts and feelings. That is when everything changed. We have Jennifer Band, the President and Founder of the Autism Awareness Shop, Scott Band, Director of Online Operations and Ardena Bosley, the Community Liaison. Their goal is to increase the independence and improve the overall quality of life for individuals on the autism spectrum through gainful employment. The success of this employment will be implemented by intensive and therapeutic on the job vocational skill building at actual retail establishments designed with supports in place. The Autism Awareness Shops serve to increase awareness and acceptance of those on the autism spectrum through community inclusion and demonstrating how every member of our community has something to contribute.  

Our guest this week is Donna Kirk. She is the author of the book “Finding Mathew”. It is a story about “the sorrows, struggles, and challenges, as well as the amazing Presence of love and joy – that come with being the parent of a child with disabilities”. Donna’s son Mathew was born brain-damaged as a result of oxygen deprivation. At the time (1970) Donna and her husband were advised by doctors to put Mathew in an institution, have another baby as soon as possible, and get on with their life. Needless to say, Donna and her husband did not take that advice! “Finding Mathew” Tells the story of Mathews life to age 40.

Description: We will be discussing the support group F.R.I.E.N.D.S. (Families, Raising, Inspiring, Educating, Networking for Down Syndrome) with Belinda Romero of the West Florida Association. Their mission is to provide all encompassing educational and support services to families who have been impacted by Down Syndrome; while promoting complete community integration of those impacted by Down Syndrome. Haley Moss is a South Florida native who was diagnosed with autism at age three. Upon receiving her autism diagnosis, her family was told that she would be fortunate to make a friend, graduate high school, or obtain her driver’s license. Haley has defied the expectations set forth within her initial diagnosis. Today, she is an attorney, author, artist, and autism advocate who writes and speaks publicly about her journey and gives hope for other autistic people and their families and friends.

This week our guest is Luis E. Viera, Esq. Luis is a founding member of Lawyer's Autism Awareness Foundation (LAAF). LAAF's Mission is to provide children who have Autism Spectrum Disorders with sensory friendly events, support their families with information on public and private educational resources and fund need-based grants to assist families with approved autism therapies. LAAF is well known for their "Sensory Friendly Santa" event for children with autism. Luis is a lawyer and an advocate for the developmentally disabled. Note: The 8th Annual Sensory Friendly Santa Event is on December 14th, 2019 at the Ferguson Law Center (1610 N. Tampa St.; Tampa, FL). Registration opens on November 9th.

This week we have representatives from The Business Center for Diversity & Inclusion (BCDI). We will be discussing their new three year Pilot Program to help employers in our community to become more comfortable and confident in hiring and managing individuals with disabilities. The Program covers Hernando, Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsborough Counties. The focus of this pilot program are individuals with intellectual disabilities and persons with autism.   The Business Center for Diversity & Inclusion (BCDI) was established to help achieve the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation's (VR) goal of becoming a top resource to the business community. Funded by the Florida Department of Education Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Business Center intends to partner with and offer employers access to no-fee training presentations, consultations and referrals to better promote, prepare, and support their interest in, or commitment to, becoming more inclusive in their hiring practices.

Patti Rendon of Rendon Support Services. Patti explains how the Florida Med-Waiver program works once an individual has qualified. Patti has been a Med-Waiver Support Coordinator for over twenty years and runs a support coordination agency. Patti is familiar with all aspects of the Florida Med-Waiver Program. She serves individuals in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, Collier, and Desoto Counties. Patti has extensive experience in Adult Day Training, Supported Living, and Supported Employment. She is an advocate for individuals with disabilities and believes that all individuals have the right to live a long full life.   We discuss Life Skills reference Meaningful Day Activities to include Companionship, Supported Employment Coaches, and Adult Day Training. These are activities that help give value to individuals with disabilities and help them to become contributing members of the community.   We also discuss living arrangements available to those with disabilities. There are various options that are available to include independent living, supported living, and group homes. There are different types of group homes based on the needs of the individual. Buddy Baseball <http://buddybaseball.org/>  is a non-competitive recreational league for boys and girls with special needs serving the Tampa Bay community. Each player is paired with a buddy to assist the player as needed on the field and in the dugout. The league fosters friendships and breaks down barriers. Not only do the players experience the thrill of participating in a sport, they also get to experience team play and camaraderie. Buddy Baseball is an opportunity like no other for children with special needs. Both girls and boys are encouraged to play and be buddies. This program is supported by the Temple Terrace Leisure Services Department. Buddy Baseball is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Games are one hour with a 15-minute practice prior. Teams consists of approximately six players, six or more buddies and coaches.
