In this week's episode of the News Man Weekly, four grown men road-trip two hours down I-71 to visit Buc-ee’s -- a gas station with a cult following, a beaver mascot and apparently bathrooms nice enough to justify burning half a tank of gas just to see them. Because nothing says journalism like chasing brisket and jerky in a retail complex the size of Mansfield. In all seriousness, with a Buc-ee’s potentially coming to Mansfield, we had to see one for ourselves. We made the trip to the grand opening, joining thousands of curious shoppers, catching a press conference from Mike DeWine and even grabbing a quick moment with founder Arch "Beaver" Aplin III. In the "News of the Week" segment, it was a classic spring chaos cocktail -- flooding that turned Bellville into a temporary waterfront community, a multi-agency drug crackdown that kept law enforcement busy and a sewage scare courtesy of wipes-that-are-definitely-not-flushable. From there, Carl, Zac and a newly reinstated Hayden dive into their weekend recap: The Source won an award, baseball’s return, college basketball and the usual chaos before jumping into "What's Carl Watching?" In News of the Week, the crew breaks down several local developments, including a new disc golf course coming to Middle Park, a potential expansion by a local steel fabricator that could bring new jobs to the area and the next phases of the West End Neighborhood Improvement Project set to begin this spring.  Finally, the show welcomes Jessica Gribben, the new President and CEO of the Richland Area Chamber & Economic Development. Gribben shares her journey from real estate and banking into community development, reflects on her deep roots in Richland County and outlines her vision for driving economic growth, workforce development, and long-term opportunity in the region. In News of the Week, the crew recaps several major local stories, including Richland County awarding the contract for the new roundabout at Lexington-Springmill and Home roads, Mansfield exploring a possible downtown DORA to boost activity and support local businesses and the latest steps in the long process of bringing a Buc-ee’s travel center to I-71/Ohio 39 corridor. Finally, the show welcomes Sherry Branham-Fonner, who is retiring after a long career in social services and public service in Richland County, most recently as executive director of the Richland County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board. She reflects on 33 years of work in the community, the changing landscape of mental health and addiction recovery, the challenges of leading during difficult times and what she hopes people better understand about the services and support systems available in Richland County. Episode 89 of the News Man Weekly opens with Carl ranting about a brutal windstorm that knocked out his power for nearly 27 hours. From there, Carl, Zac and Hayden riff on covering local sports this weekend before diving into another installment of What’s Carl Watching? In News of the Week, the crew breaks down several major headlines from around the region, including Mansfield landing a potential Buc-ee’s travel center near the I-71/Ohio 39 interchange. They also discuss the widespread power outages caused by Friday’s windstorm and the tragic loss of six Ohio Air National Guard members killed during a mid-air collision while supporting U.S. operations overseas. Episode 88 opens with Carl reflecting on turning 65. From there, the show rolls into its usual mix of banter, a fresh edition of "What’s Carl Watching" and a rundown of the week’s biggest local headlines -- including a major downtown Mansfield housing project, new cannabis tax revenue and a $100,000 reward in the search for the driver accused in a fatal construction-zone hit-and-run. Then the spotlight shifts to this week’s guest, Cassandra Kurek -- a Crawford County native, Ohio Northern student, accomplished performer, pageant contestant and arts advocate whose story is equal parts talent, determination and grit. Carl and Cassandra reminisce about sharing the stage years ago, discuss her journey from theater kid and Bratwurst Festival royalty to Miss Ohio contender and explore her advocacy for accessibility in the arts. The conversation also turns deeply personal as Cassandra opens up about her recent Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis, the treatments she’s undergoing, and why she refuses to let cancer sideline her goals, her voice or her future. Episode 87 opens on a sobering note, as Carl reflects on the escalating conflict in the Middle East and offers a message of steadiness, prayer and compassion for families with loved ones in uniform. We continue that discussion briefly, touching on the human cost of war and the importance of being skeptical about what you see online. After an update from Carl on the start of the Formula 1 season, we then dive into local headlines -- a transformational downtown Mansfield donation from John and Mimi Fernyak, the long-awaited return of Mansfield Speedway and the next phase of a proposed connector road in Lexington. Finally, the show welcomes a very special guest: Paul Kemmerling, owner of Relax, It’s Just Coffee and the primary sponsor who believed in The News Man Weekly from the beginning. Paul shares the story behind launching an independent coffee shop in downtown Mansfield, how it evolved into a true community hub and what’s next for Relax. Episode 86 opens with Carl riding a full-blown USA Hockey high after Team USA took down Canada 2–1 in overtime for gold. From there, the guys riff on the Winter Olympics then slide into “What’s Carl Watching?” In News of the Week, we recap the top headlines from the previous week, including Butler Mayor Wesley Dingus being arraigned on two misdemeanor voyeurism charges; Mansfield Mayor Jodie Perry’s upcoming State of the City address; and the Madison Local Schools Board voting to suspend an eighth-grade science teacher following allegations of inappropriate conduct toward students.   Finally, we bring in our guest of the week, Jody Odom Jr., a wildly talented local musician. He discusses his songwriting process, what inspired him to get into music, the personal story behind tracks like “Forever,” and what’s next as he rolls out new music and collaborations. Carl and Odom Jr. also reminisce about sharing the stage together years ago. He also reflects on the Mansfield music scene -- what it was like when he first started, how it’s evolved and how his own perspective within that scene has changed as he’s grown as both an artist and a performer. Episode 85 kicks off with Carl railing against the Winter Olympics being held in Italy -- not because he hates pasta or gondolas, but because the time difference and the internet have completely destroyed the magic. After the usual weekend riff, the crew runs through a packed News of the Week: The Mansfield Inn is officially emptied after the vacate order, a major roundabout project is coming to Lexington-Springmill and Home Roads and a gang-related case ends in a prison sentence. Then the show takes a sharp turn into the mysterious and fascinating: Carl and the guys sit down with Maddalena, a Mansfield mom of four and independent researcher/translator exploring ancient Greek biblical texts through a poetic, Hellenic lens. She walks through how she got into the work, what separates her approach from traditional biblical scholarship and what she believes gets lost across time, translation and power. It’s an open-minded deep dive into language, symbolism, myth, early Christianity and the kinds of interpretations that challenge what many people assume the text “has to mean.” This episode is powered by the great folks at Relax, It's Just Coffee.  Related links: Follow Maddalena on Instagram Follow Dr. Ammon on YouTube Links to the Soma library Orphic Vox Glossary Sabachthani Mark 14:51-52 Queen Medea News of the Week links Vacate order fulfilled: Last tenant leaves Mansfield Inn in Mifflin Township Bids sought for roundabout at Lexington-Springmill/Home Road intersection Mansfield police CAT team credited as gang member pleads guilty in court Be a Source Member for unlimited access to local, independent journalism. Episode 84 is a jam-packed episode of the News Man Weekly, so bear with us.  It opens with Carl unloading on Super Bowl season. From there, the crew riffs on a busy winter week, sports chaos, the latest show Carl is watching and we attempt to talk Curling. Then, it's the kind of headlines that make Mansfield feel like it’s permanently stuck between snow banks and construction cones -- a massive barn fire fought in subzero temperatures, skyrocketing fire truck costs squeezing city budgets and new momentum around a potential public pool.  Then, we invite on the reporting team behind the soon-to-launch Delaware Source. They join the show to talk about covering one of Ohio's fastest-growing counties and what excites them most about reporting in a rapidly changing community.  Finally, Richland County Commissioner Tony Vero and Wayfinder Executive Director Miles Parsons join us to talk about what's happening at the Mansfield Inn motel. The building has been deemed structurally deficient and unsafe and it must be vacated by Feb. 13. Vero and Parsons tell us what they found when they were on location last week and how they're racing to relocate residents and animals inside the building. We dig into what happens next and what it says about housing, accountability and crisis response in the area.  This episode is powered by the great folks at Relax, It's Just Coffee.  Related links: From downtown to Fresh Grounds: Blackbird Bakery makes big move Fire destroys massive metal barn along Woodville Road in Washington Township Mansfield feeling the heat from skyrocketing nationwide fire engine prices From eyesore to poolside? Then it’s on to the week’s headlines, from Mansfield City Council’s crackdown on rogue truckers to Madison voters rejecting an income tax levy and the latest developments in the Keesee court case. And yes, the guys still manage to squeeze in their usual NFL overreactions and a new segment, “What’s Carl Watching?” Later, the crew welcomes back friend of the show BJ Price from Skate Ohio to talk about the nonprofit’s exciting plans for a new “micro skatepark” at Maple Lake Park — a project made possible by comedian Dan Cummins and Bad Magic Productions.
