Why do Catholics—and so much of the Christian world—place Nativity scenes in their homes and churches at Christmas? Teresa Tomeo takes us on a virtual pilgrimage to Greccio, Italy, where St. Francis of Assisi recreated the Nativity in 1223 after returning from the Holy Land. We explore Francis’s deep devotion to the Incarnation and the Eucharist, the miraculous tradition associated with that first Nativity, and the lasting impact Greccio has had on the way Christians experience the Christmas story.
