From a Civil War major general with an evocative name to a world-spanning Marian movement born in Rome, what key milestones mark this week in Catholic history? On The Son Rise Morning Show, host Matt Swaim welcomes back Kevin Schmiesing—historian with the Freedom and Virtue Institute, co-host of the Catholic History Trek podcast, and author of A Catholic Pilgrimage Through American History.

Schmiesing highlights the life of Union Major General Erasmus Darwin Keyes, who passed away this week in 1895. Born into a prominent New England family and serving alongside Gen. Winfield Scott, Keyes converted to the Catholic Church after the Civil War following an earlier friendship with a Jesuit priest. Schmiesing then turns to October 16, 1917, when St. Maximilian Kolbe and six fellow friars founded the Militia Immaculata (Knights of the Immaculate) in Rome to promote personal consecration, the Miraculous Medal, and devotion to Our Lady—a movement that today spans millions of members worldwide.
