How did eight highly educated 17th-century French Jesuits abandon every earthly comfort and endure brutal persecution in the New World to manifest the hope of God's eternal kingdom? On The Son Rise Morning Show, host Anna Mitchell welcomes Dr. Benjamin Lewis, Director of Translation Services for the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL), to examine the Collect prayer for the October 19th Memorial of St. Jean de Brébeuf, St. Isaac Jogues, and companions.

Dr. Lewis breaks down the translation and grammatical structure of the prayer, highlighting how God chose to manifest the "blessed hope of your eternal kingdom" through the martyrs' toil and shed blood. He reflects on how hope—the theological virtue uniquely focused on the future—sustained these men as they left comfortable academic and ecclesiastical lives in Europe to live in harsh conditions among indigenous tribes. Dr. Lewis and Mitchell also share moving examples of this enduring hope, including St. Isaac Jogues returning to the mission field after suffering mutilation and St. Noël Chabanel persevering through physical discomfort and spiritual dryness to offer his life for Christ.
