How did the brilliant apologetics and historical writings of Hilaire Belloc influence Norwegian Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset on her journey into the Catholic Church? On The Son Rise Morning Show, host Matt Swaim welcomes back historian and author Stephanie Mann (Supremacy and Survival) to continue their ongoing series exploring the literary and Catholic influences on Undset, who entered full communion with the Church on All Saints' Day in 1924.

Mann introduces Belloc—half-English, half-French historian, apologist, and close friend of G.K. Chesterton—highlighting his cogent writing style and robust defenses of Catholic history. Focusing on Belloc's 1927 work, The Catholic Church and History (one of over 30 Belloc titles found in Undset's personal library), Mann explains his unique "Summa-like" structure of outlining objections before systematically dismantling them. She discusses how Belloc's intellectual rigor appealed to Undset’s sharp critical mind, contrasting the secular and Protestant objections of her era with the Catholic Church's unique capacity to satisfy human longings and offer "fullness through repose."
